Title: Pandora's Tower
Post by: Mari-Illustrious-Makinami on January 29, 2011, 10:51:59 PM
Quote from: NintendoLife
During Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata's presentation at the company's Third Quarter Financial Results Briefing, a new Nintendo title for the Wii was announced and should be hitting Japan in the first half of 2011.
Not much is known about the game at the moment, with the most solid of facts being the game will carry the title of Pandora's Tower. Iwata revealed that the game is near the end of its development stage which makes us wonder why the company has kept it under wraps until now.
A teaser web page (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/sx3j/index.html) for the game has gone live and sounds as curious as it looks. All that is displayed at the moment is a piece of artwork depicting a young female with a large tattoo on her back. Classical-style piano is played over the top of a short piece of dialogue, presumably spoken by the young woman. As translated by AndriaSang (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/29/pandoras_tower_teaser_site/), she says something along the lines of:
Dying and becoming beautiful, or living though ugly. Which will make you happier?
Some people have scanned the site and discovered a larger picture of the mysterious lady which shows a portion of her face, along with some odd text that might provide clues to the nature of the game. The web page says a Spring 2011 release is scheduled.

What kind of game do you thing this will be? I assume it will be an RPG. Edit: oops I hope it's NOT one of those card battling RPGs.

I hope it's just a standard RPG.

I'm assuming it'll be a lot like Kid Icarus, mostly because Pandora is a character in Greek mythology.

Sweet. I like Greek Mythology.

Yeah, this. If they go the regular old JRPG route, it'll be pretty boring. (I doubt Nintendo would go for something so standard, anyway. They usually have some bizarre twist on things to make it interesting.) I don't think it'll have Kid Icarus-style gameplay though since they're releasing Uprising soon and all..

I'm kind of puzzled, myself. But for sure I think gameplay will focus on decision-making, kind of like a good/evil thing....?

That makes me wonder, how good of a decision-making algorithm will it have?

I mean, there have been ones where you can do a lot evil things, than one good thing and "presto", you get the good ending.

There have also been games, where to improve your "evil score", you have to Poke the Poodle (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PokeThePoodle).

And many other cases that i can't think of.

It's better be a Zelda or Mother-like RPG with action commands like in Mario RPG.

It's better be a Zelda or Mother-like RPG with action commands like in Mario RPG.

please elaborate on this sentence.

do you mean

"It better be a Zelda or Mother-like RPG with action commands like in Mario RPG" or "It is going to be a Zelda or Mother-like RPG with action commands like in Mario RPG" ?

I would like it to be a game similar to Ocarina of Time or Mother 3 (EarthBound 64) with timed hits as in Super Mario RPG which is an awesome game.

Except Zelda's not an RPG. Hurr durr.

while that would be awsome, Aiko is (rudely) correct. Except for Zelda II:The Adventures of Link (http://zeldawiki.org/Zelda_II:_The_Adventure_of_Link), none of the Zelda games are RPG's; at least not purely. They are more a mixture of Action/Adventure and Puzzle games, with some RPG elements thrown in.

At least that's my view.

Ahem... why are so many people assuming Pandora's Tower is an RPG anyway? That's just wishful thinking. Nintendo kept this game mostly a mystery (and a secret) for some reason. There isn't any evidence to point out what is the exact nature of the game, let alone the exact genre.

Besides, if you people want more RPGs for your Wii consoles, you should more likely complain to Nintendo about not releasing games such as The Last Story and Xenoblade westwards! There is also a third-party RPG that still needs to see the light: Dragon Quest X, which had been announced as a Wii-exclusive ever since 2008!

RPG seems most likely for some reason, I for one can't wait for Dragon Quest X.

We are all probably trying our best to place the game on the Genre Wheel (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_283/8400-Introducing-The-Escapists-Genre-Wheel).

I don't know if you people heard but a brand new trailer for Pandora's Tower was released recently, and lots of new info too - courtesy of Japanese gaming magazine Weekly Famitsu.

Well, it turns out the game is a kind of RPG - an action-based RPG to be precise. The game has three main characters: Ceres, Ende, and Graiai. As far as anyone knows though, only Ende is playable. The game was developed by a Japanese developer called Ganbarion, which are apparently notable for their Japan-only Jump Star series (A crossover, fighting game series featuring characters from many famous sh?nen manga and anime, including but not limited to, Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and Naruto. These were only released for the Nintendo DS.) and many newer One Piece video game adaptations (which some did see overseas releases). By the way, whilst the One Piece games were published by Namco-Bandai (or just Bandai prior to the merge), the Jump Star games on the other hand were published by Nintendo.

Anyway, getting back to Pandora's Tower, here's the basic plot. The girl that was shown in the teaser earlier this year was 15-year-old Ceres, and the symbol on her back is not a tattoo, but rather a curse that was enforced on her by some beast. This curse is apparently killing her, and the 22-year-old Ende went on a quest to save his young friend. Whilst their kingdom was attacked by a swarm of beasts, they sought shelter inside an isolated tower. Ende apparently has to climb up the tower, which is actually made of twelve pillars (so it is more like twelve towers in all) and slay any beast he can find in it, as it seems the flesh of these beasts is what slows down Ceres' curse, and allows her to survive until Ende delivers the cure, which is apparently the flesh of all of the tower's bosses combined!

As for gameplay, it seems Graiai had presented Ende with a peculiar type of weapon he could use in his quest - a magical chain called the Orichalcum Chain. Not only will the chain help him slay the beasts in varying methods, depending on each beast, but it will also help deliver the beasts' flesh to Ceres, and also indicate the progress of Ceres' curse, represented by a bar at the bottom of the screen. Should the curse's timer reaches zero, it's game over. There is probably more to it, but that's all we have for now.

The game now has a confirmed release date: May 26th, 2011, but this is only for Japan. There no confirmation on whether there will be an overseas release date.

If you want more info, as well as actually seeing the new trailer, you can go to the official website, or simply click this (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/04/06/pandoras_tower_story/).
