Wiki References / Guides for setting up a wiki

So I'm going to start working on setting up an independent wiki in the near future, and I was wondering what guides there are to getting everything set up.

Nintendo Gaming / Video Game Piracy
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:09:30 AM »
Hello. I want to start a discussion on one of the greater controversies within the video gaming community: piracy. What are your opinions on piracy? Are there times when piracy is allowable, or should it never be tolerated? Have you personally engaged in piracy (see poll)? Do you think piracy is as bad as the media portrays it? Discuss and debate away, but please be civil and respectful of people's positions.

NIWA Discussion / The Help Wanted Thread
« on: January 17, 2011, 03:37:29 AM »
Welcome to the Help Wanted thread. If you are in need of assistance or just wanting to ask some general questions, then this would be an ideal place to start. Please try and be as informative and detailed about what you are needing, and while you are waiting for someone to reply you can try reading through others' requests and trying helping them.

Hello. Right now I'm in need of some information. Anyone know of a good and reliable place for hosting? I'm wanting somewhere to set up a blog, forum, and a wiki. Preferences are given for places that are cheap, but if anyone has any spare room on their servers that would be lovely as well.

Membership and Affiliate Requests / Rune Factory Wiki
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:59:00 AM »
I'm making a Rune Factory wiki, dedicated to the Rune Factory subfranchise of Harvest Moon. Officially, it doesn't have a name yet, but for now I'm just calling it "Harvest Rune" or "Rune Factory Wiki."
The plans so far are to:
1. Build up the wiki
2. Build up the community around the wiki
3. Determine a name for the wiki
4. Go independent
5. Join relevant IWAs, or create an IWA in the event that no relevant IWA exists.

The site so far:
http://harvestrune.wikkii.com/wiki/Main_Page

Any help would be appreciated. If you have Skype, you can add me, my Skype contact is just mjsvenn.

NIWA Discussion / Project Starchart
« on: December 30, 2010, 05:35:34 AM »
Since the earlier days of man, we have looked into the vastness of space and wondered what was up there. In our early efforts to understand what there was, we catalogued and charted the cosmos. Even today we are still cataloguing and charting the heavens. Similar to the vastness of space, there is the vastness of the internet. The member wikis of NIWA are not alone in the vast stretches of the web, but there is not centralized source that is suitable to our needs of keeping track what is out there. That is why I am founding Project Starchart, a project to help catalogue the independent wikis of the internet in a fashion that is useful to NIWA. This is beneficial in many ways, as it allows us to not only see what is out there, but also what is missing.

This catalogue is for independent wikis only. It is not for wikis on wikifarms. It is to help us see who else out there has gone independent, as well as a bit of information on their status. A key for how the catalogue works is provided below.

Category: For the sake of simplicity, wikis will be categorized into what sorts of general topic they cover. For the sake of simplicity, they will be put into the following areas. Wikis can be put into more than one category.
Video (e.g. anime, cartoons, TV shows, movies, etc...)
Literature (e.g. books, manga, comic books)
Gaming (e.g. card games, video games, table-top gaming, etc...)
Technology (e.g. software, hardware, programming, etc...)
Music (e.g. instruments, songs, etc...)
People (e.g. actors, politicians, musicians, etc...)
Places (e.g. companies, events, locations, etc...)
Reference (e.g. news, Wikipedia, etc...)
Web (e.g. memes, LOLCATZ, etc...)
Merchandise (e.g. food, toys, dolls, etc...)
Other (anything else not covered)

Name: The name of the wiki.

Focus: The actual focus of the wiki.

Site: The URL for the wiki.

Status: How far along is the wiki in its development? The general statuses will be used:
Developing: Recently opened, or still in development.
Developed: Have reached a level of stability and maturity.
Stagnated: No longer receives significant updates
Spammed: Been heavily vandalized and/or spammed.

Affiliations: What major groups or affiliations is it a part of. Is it a member of another IWA?

If you wish to contribute, please find an unlisted independent wiki and use the key as explained above. For simplicity, here is one that you just copy+paste and fill in:

Other Media / The Unofficial AMV Thread
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:26:57 PM »
Unofficial because we aren't suckups like the other threads. :P

But yes: AMVs are technically "Anime Music Videos", but it has come to include PVs (fanmade animated videos), GMVs (game music videos), and Japanese MADs.

For some reference on the matter:
Wikipedia: AMV
Wikipedia: MAD Movies

Some good places to look for AMVs:
AnimeMusicVideos.org
AMV.com.pl
YouTube

For posting of AMVs, please post a link to the video, do not embed it in the thread. If you are posting a download link, please don't post it directly to the file but to the page with the download link if that is possible.
ex. Tomare! MAD Movie
ex. White Knight
ex. Fate/External Inferno

Those examples above also count as some of my favorite AMVs, but I have a collection of over 300 AMVs.

The Lounge / What we got for Christmas...
« on: December 25, 2010, 05:38:24 PM »
Merry Christmas everyone! Let's discuss what we got for Christmas (or for our other winter holidays that we celebrate).

I got several shirts, some brand new shoes, some spice rub (yum yum), candy, a $25 book store giftcard, and $150 in cash. Not much, but I didn't really care for much since I got myself a few gifts early.

NIWA Discussion / A sad state of security.
« on: December 14, 2010, 01:33:29 AM »
I was feeling bored today, so I decided to do a quick test on some very basic security between the NIWA wikis:
How much access would an anonymous person have to the front pages of the various NIWA wikis? Prudent security suggests that wikis should keep their front pages (and all templates related to their front pages) secured and unable to be edited by strangers. Here are my results, which are shocking:

Animal Crossing Wiki:
Secure.

Bulbapedia:
Secure.

Donkey Kong Wiki:
Main page open to editing, along with all templates used by the main page.

Golden Sun Universe:
Main page open to editing, along with all templates used by the main page.

Lylat Wiki:
Secure.

Super Mario Wiki:
Secure.

Metroid Wiki:
Secure.

Nintendo Wiki:
Secure.

Pikipedia:
Templates used by main page can be edited.

Pikcanon-NOT:
Templates used by main page can be edited.

SmashWiki:
Templates used by main page can be edited.

Strategy Wiki:
Secure.

Wars Wiki:
Secure.

WikiBound:
Secure.

WiKirby:
Secure.

Zelda Wiki:
Secure.

This is frankly terrible: over one quarter of our wikis allow anonymous users to edit their main pages in some fashion. I think we should strive for better security standards than the ones we are seeing here.

Pokémon / New Type Ideas
« on: December 09, 2010, 05:06:50 AM »
As unlikely as Game Freak is to implement new types into future games, what new types would you be interested in seeing. For the sake of simplicity, here is a simple guide for how to post new types so we can get a good idea of how they'd perform:

Quote
TYPE -- CONCEPT:
Basic summary of the concept behind the type.

TYPE -- OFFENSE
Super Effective: Types that your type is super effective against
Resistant: Types that resist your type
Immune: Types that are immune to your type

TYPE -- DEFENSE
Weak to: Types that your type is weak to
Resistant: Types that your type resists
Immune: Types that your type is immune to

STATS
Give an idea of what sorts of stats the type will have.

EXAMPLE MOVES
Examples of moves for the type (can be old moves, but be reasonable)

EXAMPLE POKEMON
Examples of Pokemon for the type (can be old Pokemon, but be reasonable)

Here's a type that I created:

PLASTIC -- CONCEPT:
Plastic is composed of Pokemon made of rubber, plastic, or other synthethic polymers. The Plastic-type is known for great Special Defense, and good Attack as well. Since plastics are elastic and durable, they resist Ground and Fighting type moves, and as plastic is an insulator it resists Electric-type attacks as well. Many harsh chemicals tend to severely damage plastics, so the Plastic-type is weak to Poison.

PLASTIC -- OFFENSE:
Super Effective: Flying, Bug, Water (e.g. netting, webs, barriers)
Resistant: Steel, Fire, Poison

PLASTIC -- DEFENSE:
Weak to: Poison
Resistant: Electric, Ground, Fighting, Flying

PLASTIC -- STATS:
HP: 45
Atk: 80
Def: 70
SAtk: 50
SDef: 120
Spd: 60

EXAMPLE MOVES:
Net (Stat): Drops enemy speed by one level
Lasso (Physical): Wraps around the enemy and lowers evasion
Bounce (Physical): Same as old move which was formerly Flying-type
Inflate (Stat): Restores 1/2 max. HP

EXAMPLE POKEMON:
Jigglypuff et al: Based on balloons
Grass/Plastic: Plastic Flower Pokemon
Fire/Plastic: Candle Pokemon
Steel/Plastic: Trampoline Pokemon
