Kirby / Re: Kirby manga

Good thing you updated, I looked all over for it yesterday. Toys R Us here has a manga and comic book section next to their gazillion Mario toys.

oops. You should all be able to edit now. I have a theory that Bulba's tech guy is Julian Assange. He's been in jail, so....

type: [   url  =    link    ]    Word you want [  /    url   ]
without any spaces. I had to space it out so it wouldn't work example:

[   url   =    https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-category-details/a/18501.do   ]  New Epic Yarn patches from Club Nintendo   [     /url    ]
makes:

New Epic Yarn patches from Club Nintendo

Well I was thinking to just have some cool looking award images. Nothing major, since it would be an award to the wiki, unless you guys have something else in mind. If so, that's cool.

Well, NIWA is a group we volunteer to be in, so you won't see anyone muscling the votes around. Theoretically it could be done easily by Zelda Wiki and it's large slate of crats, or Bulbapedia could always start some massive rank ups to swing a vote. But why would they?

I'll tell you this much, most of the things we vote on are near unanimous decisions. We discuss things as thoroughly as possible, and good ideas are clearly good ideas. I can't think of any examples of a close vote, but I'm pretty certain we are mature enough to recognize that we don't have a full consensus when a vote is leading by a slim margin. At that point, the issues are likely to be revisited with compromises expected from all involved.

I personally would like to know what exactly is potentially barring two wikis of the same series to join (i.e. two Pokemon Wikis)

Pressed for time, but I'm most compelled to answer this one. Most of us agree that having 2 Pokemon Wikis would cause too much trouble. Imagine trying to add an in-article link for Pikachu to your affiliated Pokemon Wiki, some one would have to get bent.

And as far as content goes, both would be encyclopedias covering the same subject matter. There aren't a whole lot of ways to present the same info in the same style. Eventually people would prefer one over the other, and we'll end up watching to see which wiki kills the other.

I suggest this. Even though, it wouldn't be done by the wiki staff; it could be fun for the regular editors/viewers.

Not a bad idea for a thread. I want people to answer the question: What changes would you make to NIWA if you were in total control? or something. One thing I had in mind was to find more ways to get non-staff involved in NIWA things.

I had a little year-end idea for a regular editor/niwa member to manage. It shouldn't be done by a wiki's staff, but I was thinking to have something like usual "Viewer's Choice Awards"; in which regulars nominate and vote on things like "Best Main Page", "Wiki of the Year", "Best NIWA template bar", "Best Logo", etc...

I'd expect tons of activity on that and hopefully some inspiration for the wiki staffs to make improvements. Or really get a good idea of what others like from the other wikis. I see it only leading to positive results.

As you stomp around NIWA, demanding change, bear in mind, the whole thing is new, less than one year old, modeled after nothing but our own ideas, and run by people dedicated to at least one other site (their wiki).  We're open to seeing specific ideas for reform and organization.

I thought GameHiker was the wiki where unwikid series would go? :/

GameHiker would be a better place to build a new wiki's content. The scope is NWiki is meant to be on the technical Nintendo stuff that few of us care to write about at FanWikis. The game pages are meant to be short, brief coverages of the game, and link to the NIWA member for the indepth coverage. So while NWiki certainly shouldn't have character, level/dungeon, item, boss pages; GameHiker does include Notable Characters, Important Items, etc. I'm certain any work to later be imported type deal could be struck with them; and I'd imagine they would retain content that falls within their scope.

Well there is a Sega Retro group, and a wiki named Sonic Retro. Sonic wiki is much much smaller in comparison. I asked, but haven't gotten a response, about whether or not those two wikis are on good terms.

I predict:
  • A NIWA Copyleft license, of our own design and terms more fitting of what we do than the current generic licenses
  • More development on mobile skins and apps
  • More crosswiki editing
  • A list of development ideas by us submitted to MediaWiki developers concerning the core software. (like the fact that we need # that symbol in some page titles, and a lesser used one should take the place of the section urls)

I sent Moydow a message some time ago in skype. If WiKirby's new VPS plan allows it, I may be able to share space with them. But Archaic is willing to host at least another wiki, afaik.

Doesn't matter about the wikibound.com. In the space of time between making my first post and this one, someone registered it and parked a page on it.
That's one reason I never publicly post potential domain purchases. I've seen this happen so many times that I swear some people must have some kind of bots sniffing out unregistered domain names and buying them to park ads on.

Anyway, that's an awesome thing for you to have done. You have my gratitude as well.

I wish ICANN would create a .wiki but until they do, .info is the best to get for a starting wiki imo. Despite being a new site, WiKirby.info shows up high in the google search term "Kirby Info" which is a perfectly probable search. New sites need all of the boost they can get.

Ps. Tacopill, or Tina, I'm still working a lot, so could one of you edit WK's News to the final url when its done. Announce the move, as I want WK to cover some notable NIWA member changes.

Kirby / Re: New Kirby DS game revealed today!

none yet as far as I know other than a brief mention in the Iwata Asks interview with the Epic Yarn staff. I predict they only released that much to show people they are still working on Kirby titles. Consider how long it's been :p and the fact that Good Feel developed KEY. Whenever KEY is released in Europe, I think we'll see more of the DS game info, as they might want to send the same message to European gamers that may not have caught the news elsewhere.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Breaking even for independent wikis

I think Zelda Wiki does too. But we'll never see confirmation on that.

Why do you say we'll never see confirmation on that?

The owner just doesn't discuss anything like that too much. Ultimately, it is his decision and he can decide whether or not he wants to reveal the wiki's financial situation. I don't completely blame him. If the wiki doesn't generate more than it costs, people could criticize it for not being cost effective enough, and if it generates more than it costs, people could criticize it for having too many ad impressions in the pages.

And that owner isn't really involved in NIWA's discussion posts much or trying to encourage other wikis to start-up/go independent;. This is the only reason I openly discuss these matters as far as WiKirby goes. I want others to have a good idea of what to expect if they were going to bring a wiki into NIWA.

The current president of Nintendo is from HAL. So... that means something. And I can't think of a HAL title on any other modern system.

So Kirby is the only pureblood?

I think Zelda Wiki does too. But we'll never see confirmation on that. WiKirby almost did, :p If we didn't need a much more powerful server, we would be above the breaking even point. But that was while on a $4 per month plan and now we have a $40 per month plan. I expect by the time we break even for a month, it still won't have covered the previous losses, and the demands on the site will require yet another server upgrade. :S

Hi,

I have a question about MediaWiki.

I wanted to make my own wiki, but when I downloaded MediaWiki and PHP, they both came with a bunch of folders with files I couldn't open.

Can someone help me understand what they are, maybe make a tutorial on MediaWiki?

Because I wanted to make a wiki of "The Legendary Starfy"...

We've been talking to the admins of Starfy Wikia. As soon as Archaic returns from outer space (I think) we should be able to get them set up on a server. I'm sure we'll be glad to see you contribute to the project.
