Vector skin
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:31:55 PM »
Anyone good with coding the vector skin setting?

I've been testing how to make a vector skin for DKWiki that's similar to it's Monobook counterpart - that is, This background, khaki colored content background, etc. When I tried to in my custom vector it messes up the skin.

lol... It depends on what kind of changes you want done.

basic changes will probably be CSS only, while major ones would probably involve the PHP file

Define "basic" and "major"?

I would assume the CSS.

If you're just altering the backgrounds, then you wouldn't need to do anything on the PHP side. I haven't done anything myself with the PHP side, but I assume you would mostly need it if you were to heavily rearrange the layout of things.

I'm inexperienced with Vector, though, and I've only played around with Monobook. :( Define messes up (ex: screenshot), though, and I miiiiiiight be able to help with my small dose of CSS knowledge.

Small customizations like this skin at ACWiki were all done by editing just the CSS file. If you want to edit the border and tab colors, you'll need to do some image editing as well. :)

HavocReaper, when you have a chance, check out some vector css code by myself and dkpat. Place the code in your vector.css page at

Code: [Select]
User:HavocReaper48/vector.css

or

Code: [Select]
MediaWiki:Wector.css

for general Vector-skin CSS.

And, by the way: Sorry for flooding your Recent changes :D.

Unless you actually have a Wector skin, I think tacopill meant this for the second option. :P
Code: [Select]
MediaWiki:Vector.css

I tested it out on ACWiki's sandbox. Looks pretty nice, but I think the navigation links should be a different color. White, maybe?

The sidebar's kinda ugly. Seems squished. Perhaps the sidebar colors should sync with the jungle background?

Other than that it looks great.

Hm... I know those are the colors that you guys have up right now, but they kind of clash a lot, especially the light tan (#eee8aa). And since Vector uses grey borders default (most noticable here), you'll probably want to change that in the final product.

I do like the bright yellow lines on the brown parts, though, that seems to click pretty well..

I hope I'm not coming off as some snooty graphics nerd, though! But it does look kind of... sloppy. D:

(if you want I can try coming up with a jungle-y color scheme, but if you just wanted a vector port of your current skin that's cool too '-')

Sure you can test a jungle theme, so we can compare to the other one.

EDIT:

I like this version I tweaked but the gray outline is a bit "sloppy" as Tina put it.

I'm curious why you want this done now. (It's something I've never quite understood) Why do you specifically want a Vector edit?

Simply,

a) I like Vector

b) Seemed unfair for the Monobook users to have a cool custom skin and the Vector people are left out

c) The wiki only supports two skins, so why not customize them both?

As a sort of explanation: Most of my prior experience is small changes here and there, that was to have a minor effect somewhere else on the wiki.

This is the first time i did something with this many changes, and the first time to effect the entire skin.  :eekdance:

Anyway, sorry for the sloppiness. . I will try better next time.

also, where do people find all these sharing websites. Mediashare, imageshack, pastebin,  puu.sh?

puu.sh is a screenshot program, actually. It allows one to just click and drag a portion of your screen to screenshot, and it automatically uploads it.

I use Cloud for OS X, which does the same thing as Tina described.
