I think any server with a flashpolicy in place is a plus. This allows the use of a flash client called LightIRC that does not have ADs, supports some theme customization, any amount of users.

Example: Hyrule.net's Chat

The set up PJIRC in the linked topic gives 6667/#niwa as the SystemNet server's port/channel.

I recall joining SystemNet's #niwa a while back (systemnet's the only server I go to, actually) and it wasn't registered. Probably got dropped because nobody used it for several months.

So, uh, therefore I think that's a good case for not using that one. :P

Thank you, I have updated the post.

Makes sense to me.

Can I make a suggestion that if we do try building an IRC chat, that we do it on the Rizon Network. It's one of the largest networks, and it does support flash so people don't need an IRC program if they don't have one.

It also is home to lots of technical/fan based chatrooms, so if you love anime or video games or computing, then Rizon would be a great server to be on.

I think the lack of activity is only because a lot of people don't know about it. The people who know about it don't go on it because nobody else goes on. I think it would be fairly easy to revive if it were publicized a bit.

So, no one goes on it, because it is not active; and it is not active, because no one goes on it?

OK, I'm going to continue this here.

On IRC, you can:

-Take logs
-Register nicknames
-Make channels restricted to only certain people's accounts

Just like on Skype. However on IRC you can discuss without registering an account and being invited into a channel group or whatever skype needs to be done. I may seem a bit biased, I just find skype too hard to set up just to use IM. Aside from that, #niwa can be active if people just go to it. And trust me, Darkmyst isn't too hard to understand - I can post up a tutorial if anybody wants me to.

(see that's why Edofenrir is awesome)

Let's not forget that on IRC you can have bots to play games with, or to help moderate the chatroom.

Also, why was the NIWA chatroom on Systemnet not registered? I went ahead and registered it so that it isn't available for squatting.

StrategyWiki's server has one; I could get it added to a chat set up there if anyone wanted it.

Prod has informed me that we can use the ABXY servers to help create/reform our IRC efforts. Please read bellow

Quote
[1:14:37 PM] Enrique Guerrero: And, lets not forget that NIWA has two IRC channels, both of which are completely abandoned
[1:15:01 PM] tacopill: yea, i tried to get them revived with the IRC thread
[1:15:14 PM] Enrique Guerrero: but nope
[1:15:28 PM | Edited 1:15:41 PM] Enrique Guerrero: so I suggest, you know, in the first place not have two IRCs
[1:15:48 PM] tacopill: will 3 do?
[1:15:54 PM] Enrique Guerrero: no i mean.. 1
[1:16:10 PM] Enrique Guerrero: if two are inactive, there's no purpose in having them
[1:16:21 PM] tacopill: http://www.niwanetwork.org/forums/index.php?topic=799
[1:18:23 PM] Enrique Guerrero: I seriously think we should drop all channels and go to SW's
[1:18:47 PM] tacopill: want to bring it up in the thread?
[1:19:03 PM] Enrique Guerrero: haha sure, watch this
[1:19:08 PM] tacopill: ok
[1:19:25 PM] Enrique Guerrero: read it :D
[1:19:51 PM] tacopill: (rofl)
[1:20:04 PM] tacopill: you pasted the skype log
[1:20:27 PM] Enrique Guerrero: Hey, i tried long and hard to write that maximum effort post
[1:21:09 PM] tacopill: are you sure you were trying to maximize effort and not effecincy ;)
[2:26:44 PM] Prodigion: sw as in strategywiki?
[2:27:27 PM] Enrique Guerrero: yes
[2:28:25 PM] Prodigion: sounds good to me
[2:29:54 PM] Steve: [1:18 PM] Enrique Guerrero:

<<< I seriously think we should drop all channels and go to SW'sOr use Skype as the official chatroom instead
[2:30:13 PM] tacopill: can't do that
[2:30:21 PM] tacopill: not everyone has skype
[2:30:44 PM] tacopill: but this is not to make an official NIWA anything.
[2:30:57 PM] Enrique Guerrero: Like i said before, two chats. Skype public and IRC.
[2:31:04 PM] Enrique Guerrero: And of course Skype staff chat
[2:31:56 PM] tacopill: this is about reducing the amount of NIWA IRC's to one, and get use of them.
[3:42:52 PM] Prodigion: we could always set up a #NIWA on our irc server
[3:43:17 PM] Prodigion: give op status to some of the staff from each wiki
[3:43:21 PM] Prodigion: and let it grow from there
[3:43:33 PM] tacopill: that would be cool
[/qoute]

What do you think?

Sounds good. I personally would prefer we go with a server with a bit more population, but I know how to be on multiple servers at once so it won't be a huge inconvenience for me.

Any more on this?  I'm all for having a channel set up on StrategyWiki's or Tappy's server, or just making one of the ones already set up the 'official' one.

A #NIWA has been registered on irc.abxy.org (StrategyWiki's server), but hasn't seen any use yet.

I think we are still in the catch-22: No one uses it because it is not active; and it's active because no one is using it.

SO, here's what i propose:

1. We adopt StrategyWiki's IRC server as the "Unofficial" NIWA IRC server.
2. We make it more active, by actually going to it and using it. Do we want to set up a schedule of when people volunteer to watch over the channel? this way it isn't empty.
3. As it becomes more active, more and more NIWA related stuff is placed in it to bring over traffic. Can include:
  • Replace current threads that have embed IRC programs
  • Page on N Wiki
  • Page on the NIWA Hub site
4. We suggest to the staff to make an "Officialize" the IRC Channel.
