Lylat Wiki is seeking help
« on: May 08, 2011, 07:55:09 PM »
With the merger of Lylat Wiki and Arwingpedia nearly complete, and the wiki having content in the actual pages, i thought it was time started improving the wiki internally.

So, i am opening this question to everyone in NIWA: How do you think Lylat Wiki should be improved? In what ways are we lacking in terms of community, content, speed and everything else.

I am open to all suggestions, although i can't guarantee all of them can be used.

I have also started a discussion on this on the wiki, if you are interested in reading or discussing potential ideas on improving the wiki.

So, what do you guys got for me?

Although I know very little about Star Fox, I think I can try to help a bit.

- When will there be a featured article and image? The wiki has been around for quite a while, more than a year according to the news bar.
- The news are a bit wordy, and the template for it takes up a lot of space on the main page. I think that some of the older news should be removed and placed on an "Old News" page or something. For example, the 3DS news is from March, and I think most people viewing the site would already know that it's been released in the US.
- I think the Main Page redesign has been around for quite a while. Is it still "new"?
- The section that begins "Are you a fan of Star Fox? A specialist to a given area of the game?" - the Directory of WikiProjects template is sort of hard to read. Also, when the thing is opened (the show/hide thing) the template is hidden; is there any way to make it show when you first open the thing?
- "Each Wiki Project needs to work with the other wiki projects in order to ensure that each page (article, template, category or file)." Each page what?
- There are quite a few strangely-worded phrases on pages in the wiki I've noticed, and a few grammar errors. Maybe I'll make an account for grammar stuff.

Sadly, I know nothing about Star Fox, but I hope this might help!

Allow anonymous edits.

Edit: I like how the main page style randomises.  I don't think I've seen that before.

Allow anonymous edits.

I am sorry, but how will allowing Anonymous edits help us out?

Edit: I like how the main page style randomises.  I don't think I've seen that before.

Thank you, i will pass it on to the designer.

Sounds good. Thank you very much.

Yea. the system we have requires people to vote on the articles and images to make them featured. But since we aren't that active, i am not sure we will be voting on anything any time soon.

Which means, we may need change the system .... or wait for it to be active... :)

- The news are a bit wordy, and the template for it takes up a lot of space on the main page. I think that some of the older news should be removed and placed on an "Old News" page or something. yea, The way our....news person writes is pretty detailed, giving you all the important information, reducing your need to go to the news site itself.

Anyway, Archived news is available here. It appears that, We just keep the last three  news items on the page, and then when new information comes up, we move the oldest item to the archives.

It would seem though, we don't often have news to report..... until lately, that is ;).

- I think the Main Page redesign has been around for quite a while. Is it still "new"?

This is true, but i haven't figured out what i want to put there yet.....

:o I got it! Featured Voting and/or a link to Imporving the wiki.

- The section that begins "Are you a fan of Star Fox? A specialist to a given area of the game?" - the Directory of WikiProjects template is sort of hard to read. Also, when the thing is opened (the show/hide thing) the template is hidden; is there any way to make it show when you first open the thing?

yea. i can do that. :)

Goes and changes it

done.

- "Each Wiki Project needs to work with the other wiki projects in order to
ensure that each page (article, template, category or file)." Each page what?

Um.... that each page meets up to our awesome Quality Standards...... yea... that's it.

Anyway, the idea was to encourage the wiki projects to work together to help create good articles, especially when a page falls under multiple project's jurisdictions.

I would reword it, but i don't know what to change it to.

- There are quite a few strangely-worded phrases on pages in the wiki I've noticed, and a few grammar errors. Maybe I'll make an account for grammar stuff.

Sounds good. I appreciate all the help i can get.

Sadly, I know nothing about Star Fox, but I hope this might help!

It does, it really does.

To Both of you:
Thank you for all of your help!    :) :)

You'll find people passing through are more likely to fix an error or add a little something if they don't have to sign up to do so.

True, true, but they are also likely to troll, ruin pages, create unecessary work for us, etc.
