The Nintendo Digital Event @ E3 2014 was Nintendo's primary showing at E3 2014. While similar to the Nintendo Direct format used in place of a proper E3 conference in the previous year, the format was revamped for this show.

Throughout the show are brief comedy sketches done by the staff of Robot Chicken.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

After a skit showing Reggie Fils-Aimé and Satoru Iwata fighting, it cuts to them playing Super Smash Bros. for Wii U using their Miis. While it appears Reggie will win, Iwata places a figurine of Mario on the GamePad, which brings Mario into the game to fight and beat Reggie.

Masahiro Sakurai discusses Super Smash Bros., confirming that Miis will be playable characters in the new games and revealing their custom move sets. Sakurai then talks about Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and showing an overview trailer of the game, revealing that it will launch on October 3, while the Wii U version will launch during the holiday season of 2014.

amiibo

Reggie Fils-Aimé starts by giving a general overview of Nintendo's E3 event before revealing a line of figurine products, amiibo. amiibo can be recognized by any Wii U system, and by reading the data on an amiibo can unlock new content in games, while data can also be sent back to the figure. For example, in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the first amiibo-compatible game, players can use amiibo to place that character in the game and personally train and customize it. amiibo functionality was also confirmed for Mario Kart 8.

Reggie also directed viewers to watch a dedicated amiibo trailer posted after the event to learn more information about amiibo.

Yoshi's Woolly World

Yarn Yoshi was re-revealed under the new name Yoshi's Woolly World in a "Developer Story" segment featuring Takashi Tezuka of Nintendo and Etsunobu Ebisu of Good-Feel. The game now features a new yet similar art style.

  • The game wasn't developed as a sequel to Kirby's Epic Yarn but specifically as a Yoshi game, using the yarn and fabric art style to introduce new gameplay.
  • The core difference between Super Mario and Yoshi games is that Yoshi games don't have a time limit, allowing for exploration.
  • Compared to most action games, Yoshi's abilities allow him many advantages; thus, the game was designed so that Yoshi's abilities could be used for exploring the game world.
  • The game has a co-op mode, allowing two players to play through the game and overcome challenges together.
  • Many types of yarn styles were experimented with before the "stuffed yarn" Yoshi was chosen.

The game was announced to launch in 2015.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a spin-off of Super Mario 3D World, was revealed with a trailer, and announced to launch during the 2014 holiday season on Wii U.

The Legend of Zelda

Eiji Aonuma talks about the history of The Legend of Zelda, stating that the new game would revisit the conventions of the series, and use the full capabilities of the Wii U hardware to create a vast and open world similar to the earlier titles in the series, as transitioning the series to 3D made it harder to create a vast world. Finally, Aounuma gave a first look at the new game, announced to be released in 2015.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

A trailer showing off many aspects of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, including new Mega Evolutions for the Hoenn starting Pokémon. The games were announced to launch November 21, 2014.

Bayonetta 2

A trailer showing off Bayonetta 2. At the end of the trailer it was announced that the original Bayonetta would be ported to Wii U, featuring new content in the form of Nintendo-themed costumes. Both games would launch in a bundle pack releasing in October 2014.

Hyrule Warriors

Hyrule Warriors was shown off in a Developer's Story featuring Hisahi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayashi of Koei Tecmo, and Eiji Aonuma of Nintendo.

  • Many of the staff are fans of the series.
  • The core difference between Hyrule Warriors and normal The Legend of Zelda games is the Dynasty Warriors style of gameplay.
  • The game includes giant bosses like those seen in The Legend of Zelda, which have a unique way of defeating them like in the regular games.
  • The game features a co-op mode using both the television and Wii U GamePad.
  • There are a number of playable characters from the series of origin, including characters that have never been playable in a game before.
  • The game features the "essence" of both The Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors as well as several others, allowing for a completely unique experience.

The release date was announced as September 26, 2014.

Kirby & the Rainbow Curse

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, a clay-stylized Kirby game with similar gameplay to Kirby: Canvas Curse, was revealed for Wii U, to be released in 2015.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

X was shown off in a trailer, now titled Xenoblade Chronicles X and releasing in 2015.

Mario Maker

Mario Maker was revealed in a trailer, to be released in 2015 for Wii U.

Splatoon

A brand new game titled Splatoon was revealed, exclusively for Wii U. The game was showcased by Hisahi Nogami, Yusuke Amano, and Tsubasa Sakaguchi.

  • The game is an 8-player, 4-on-4 online multiplayer shooter.
  • The primary focus of the game is to cover the ground with ink, and the team with the most ground at the end of the match is the winner.
  • Rather than create characters and base the game off of them, the gameplay was created first, followed by coming up with characters the team thought would fit in the game world.
  • The idea to turn from a person into a squid was thought of by Sakaguchi, and afterward the team thought of ways to use this concept to expand the gameplay.
  • Using the Wii U GamePad, players can quickly move the camera around by tilting it. The GamePad also displays a map with the current ink on it in real time. Finally, players can jump to the locations of other players by tapping them on the map.

The game was also shown off in a trailer, giving the game a 2015 release date.
