Wii U Chat is a communication service that allows users to speak to each other over video using their Wii U consoles over Nintendo Network. The application was released pre-installed on the Wii U console at launch, with the version 2.0.0 system update enabling the service's functionality.
Wii U Chat enables users to communicate with others that they have registered on their friends list. Only the Wii U GamePad can be used while the application is open. From the main menu, the player's friends are listed out and can be scrolled through using the D-pad, left control stick, or stylus. Below the user's information is given, including the option to call them, the option to open and view their profile on Miiverse, whether or not they are online (also denoted by their Mii being surrounded by a blue background), and how many chats the two users have had together. On the left side is a button that allows viewers to see any missed calls, and below this is an option to enlarge the user's current video feed to check their image.
When calling a friend, the users' video feeds will be displayed on both the television screen (if enabled) and the Wii U GamePad. Users see each other over video using the Wii U GamePad's built-in camera, while users can chat using either the GamePad's microphone, or (if the system has been updated to version 4.0.0) an external headset. Tapping the feed on the top left allows users to toggle between displaying their video and the other user's video. The size of the video displayed on the TV can be adjusted by pressing the + and - buttons. Both users can draw on the GamePad touchscreen using the stylus; the color of the ink can be adjusted using the control sticks, while the pencil icon on the top left corner can switch between drawing and erasing. The user can also press X to clear all drawings from the screen. To end the call, a user must tap the phone icon on the bottom right, then tap "Good-Bye".
On the bottom right of both the main menu and video feed is the options menu, which allows users to toggle the TV display on or off during calls, enable or disable the microphone, open the help menu, or adjust parental controls.
