Since the earlier days of man, we have looked into the vastness of space and wondered what was up there. In our early efforts to understand what there was, we catalogued and charted the cosmos. Even today we are still cataloguing and charting the heavens. Similar to the vastness of space, there is the vastness of the internet. The member wikis of NIWA are not alone in the vast stretches of the web, but there is not centralized source that is suitable to our needs of keeping track what is out there. That is why I am founding Project Starchart, a project to help catalogue the independent wikis of the internet in a fashion that is useful to NIWA. This is beneficial in many ways, as it allows us to not only see what is out there, but also what is missing.

This catalogue is for independent wikis only. It is not for wikis on wikifarms. It is to help us see who else out there has gone independent, as well as a bit of information on their status. A key for how the catalogue works is provided below.

Category: For the sake of simplicity, wikis will be categorized into what sorts of general topic they cover. For the sake of simplicity, they will be put into the following areas. Wikis can be put into more than one category.
Video (e.g. anime, cartoons, TV shows, movies, etc...)
Literature (e.g. books, manga, comic books)
Gaming (e.g. card games, video games, table-top gaming, etc...)
Technology (e.g. software, hardware, programming, etc...)
Music (e.g. instruments, songs, etc...)
People (e.g. actors, politicians, musicians, etc...)
Places (e.g. companies, events, locations, etc...)
Reference (e.g. news, Wikipedia, etc...)
Web (e.g. memes, LOLCATZ, etc...)
Merchandise (e.g. food, toys, dolls, etc...)
Other (anything else not covered)

Name: The name of the wiki.

Focus: The actual focus of the wiki.

Site: The URL for the wiki.

Status: How far along is the wiki in its development? The general statuses will be used:
Developing: Recently opened, or still in development.
Developed: Have reached a level of stability and maturity.
Stagnated: No longer receives significant updates
Spammed: Been heavily vandalized and/or spammed.

Affiliations: What major groups or affiliations is it a part of. Is it a member of another IWA?

If you wish to contribute, please find an unlisted independent wiki and use the key as explained above. For simplicity, here is one that you just copy+paste and fill in:

WikiIndex, S23, and Dmoz. Dmoz is an open source directory program that catalogs sites by human review rather than a metatag search. It's meant to help real sites show up higher in the search engines that factor in dmoz reviews. I've submitted several wikis to them but haven't seen them added. I'm guessing we'll need someone to join dmoz and add the NIWA wikis. Any takers?

WikiIndex indexes all wikis, not just independent ones, making it a chore to find out what wikis are independent and which ones aren't at a glance. S23 gives some nice details on how active the board is, but doesn't necessarily give apparent information on what the board covers and what affiliations it might have.
The point of this project to present information in a way that is useful to NIWA.

Archaic

I might suggest it would be easier to create this index on WikiIndex, giving the wikis on there "Independent" or "Wiki Farm" categories as appropriate.

Since WikiIndex doesn't have a single category rounding together every indie wiki yet, mind if I add to the list some more?

tacopill

thank you for these additions.

To make it more useful to NIWA, I suggest we add something to the key that tells us if the wikis are related to Nintendo, and if they are, stuff like if they appear on non-Nintendo consoles, if they were developed by a third party, etc.

This would help very well.
