The Lounge / Re: Medabots Wiki - We need help!

How big/busy is your wiki? TMD offers cheap hosting plans, here and a lifetime free domain name sweetens the deal. Compare your stats to my wiki, and if you are near that or below, then I can say there shouldn't be any problems with using that plan. Don't expect much money from the ads, but if you want me to send you a referral from Kontera, I'll do that, they'll credit me $25 bucks. Which would be cool, and if we stay in touch, I'm thinking to some day get together with several small wikis and split the cost of a more expensive plan on a more powerful machine.

And to pay your initial server costs, you can use a credit/debit card, many will let you send a check/money order, and I'm not even sure about PayPal.

Glad to see you come around! I've been telling people you and Masamune were abducted by aliens...

The one way I can see skipping redirects is to go categorizing everything except the redirects in a hidden category, for instance [[Category:SiteName]], and when text replacing opt to go by category and choose the mother category.

I'm doing my part on mainpage pimpin (: (: http://starfoxwiki.org/Lylat_Wiki , Damned proud of this mainpage, with a couple random themes (2 so far). I'm willing to do others too, since this one turned out so nice

Oh, wow! That main page looks great! \o/ I love the idea of the character-themed main pages, too. Awesome!

Sooo close to finishing WikiBound's. Though, since it's just an affiliate at the moment and not an actual member... would it be still okay to have the NIWA footer linking to the wikis? That's the last thing I need to implement, otherwise, everything's all styled and programmed.

I see no issue with adding it. I mean we know WB will be a member and after induction, the only thing that would change is the member wikis adding WB to their NIWAbar.

Your work on the Star fox wiki makes the whole place look so much better. And not worry leem, I'm moving to AC wiki to work until that thing is done, I'm only sidetracked bc Nintendo decided to release a boatload of new art for Epic Yarn again today.

I haven't heard anything either, but jezuz! Nintendo never released this much art for a game! Every week I'm getting more patches from them and I missed out on some before.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Your name in an article
October 05, 2010, 05:50:04 PM
Thanks! If you want to help get people's name in more articles. This would be a good start

I just searched for "player" to see where it currently could go. But I'm certain there's out-of-universe content we haven't covered such as how Canvas Curse's story involves the player as tho the DS stylus were the magic paintbrush from Drawcia.

Gosh! I didn't even think of it, until you mentioned it, but now it's on Facebook and WiKirby. And maaaan.... I love writing Wars Wiki news in theme :D

Well to be fair, KC, up until Moydow and I started chatting, I don't think any of us thought it was possible either. Eventually I plan to add it to WK, but I was like "Let Wars Wiki have some time in the spotlight." As I was saying in skype, with the personalization tools we have on WiKirby and Wars Wiki, and quite possibly many many more that I have ideas for... "Web 2.0 allowed YOU to create content, and if we have any influence, Web 3.0 will be defined as a site in which that content you created knows YOU." We'll have to work it, but I think its possible.

NIWA Discussion / Wars Wiki's newest Awesome feature
October 05, 2010, 12:10:22 AM
Wars Wiki's Language dilemma
Many of our friends at Wars Wiki live in Europe and use spellings like "colour" where as we Americans use "color". A small debate arose on which spelling for terms should be used in the article body. When Moydow and I began working on WiKirby's personalization (your name in the article instead of "the player") I had in mind that we should figure out a way to get that level of personalization (or personalisation) to Wars Wiki. I love finding solutions in debates where everyone actually wins and this as well as the gender pronouns debate on WiKirby seem to do exactly that, give everyone what they want, instead of making a choice and forcing the other to accept.

And it was successful! Although this may seem to be a very minor and trivial feat at first glance, I assure you, Moydow's efforts should be respected. The MediaWiki software itself didn't bother to display regionally specific spellings even for words not linked to in the article body. My own role in this was only having the idea on how it would get the region from the editor and getting the code to JoJo. This is Moydow's creation. Now I'm hoping KC will textreplace the words to implement it fully.

But what would be totally awesome is if you guys could go add a few new regional difference spellings or even implement a few here and there! Afterall, you'd get to brag about your role in (quite possibly) a revolutionary feature so new it isn't used anywhere else yet!

Wouldn't you think that personalization is the future of wikis?

NIWA Discussion / Re: Your name in an article
October 04, 2010, 07:34:00 PM
I brought that back up in the talk page, hopefully the personalization tools are an acceptable compromise to those opposed to using "they" and "their". I have no issues with WB using it, I wouldn't think Moydow would. Although it's intended to give WiKirby some spunk, I knew from the start of WiKirby that it would be an experimentation and innovation cradle. And that other friendly wikis could use whatever we conjure with no strings attached.

Things in the works (for other wikis actually) are even more incredible than this set of templates. Of course, I love the element of surprise, so.... no one will know until its ready-except those who know. :p

Thanks Irockz, I can't believe that feature generated more new accounts than the game give-away :D

I'll try adding your improvised code now Moydow.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Leader
October 02, 2010, 04:14:38 PM
Initially I wasn't keen on the idea of a leader, as NIWA staff is composed of people already in leadership positions in collaborative projects, so the idea seemed like an oxymoron to me. But if so many people feel its worth a shot, then I'm willing to give it a go. I think I have a firm grasp on the state of NIWA, strong positive relations with my fellows here (as well as with the pending members), and a pretty solid understanding of each wikis' strong points, weak points, & personalities.

Naturally I have a few misgivings. Leader is meh... if I end up being chosen, I'd prefer the title Numero Uno Cultivator or something gardeny to match NIWA=garden. :D I think we've strongly overlooked that great aspect of the name and should work to actually theme NIWA more fittingly.

Secondly, for a while now, I've felt that the Mario Wiki guys seem left out. I've asked them to compile a Wish List so we could give them a hand on things where they'd like for us to. And started announcing new Shroom issues on WiKirby's Main Page, in an effort to patch up the divide with more cross-wiki projects. But no one really came to help out on the Table Guide with the goal of getting something comprehensive on each wiki for a useful feature of MediaWiki. I built it as much as I could, and was sort of distressed to see so many complaints on how NIWA wasn't living up to what it was meant to be; all while any of the projects aimed for multiwiki benefit sat around neglected.

I've also slighted what I could do on WiKirby in favor of trying to maintain and grow the organization. Now I'm not supportive of adding members as soon as they have MediaWiki installed. I still think it's up to them to create the wiki and shape it before we throw it out to the masses. Let's face it, the public is dog-eat-dog. Despite not wanting to add a wiki while I feel it's underdeveloped, I still put aside building up my own wiki to give a hand here and there. 200 articles might be too high, but the only things I really look for is
  • A developed Main Page
  • Policies
  • Example articles for core aspects beyond stub status
  • Staff activity

I do realize NIWA can help small wikis grow and that's evidenced by Wars Wiki, WiKirby, and Metroid Wiki. Wars Wiki existed preNIWA, so I felt they deserved membership before WK and MW.o. A special case if you will. WK and MW.o took two vastly different approaches. Adam and I chose to work slowly in the background and launch when we were ripe. MW went full bore head to head with a rather nasty competitor. Having Zeldapedia issues in mind while working on WK, I approached the Wikia version prior to our launch to cement the relationship and ensure plagiarism wouldn't be tolerated on WK's end. The results of the two approaches aren't totally clear as MW has more articles, members, views, etc. I constantly read complaints of the staff being the only active editors. Ultimately, I think MW.o is doing well considering the Wikitroid entrenchment, but because of a great staff, Steve's design, and whatever little help came out of the skype chats among NIWA members.

This is somewhat relevant as inducting new wikis seems to be the primary polarizing point here these days. It will be difficult to replicate MW.o's success story, using the same management style. I still feel Lylat Wiki could have worked on their Main Page, defined colors, and either added all of the redlinks to flair images in all of the templates Example (look for "FoxHeadSprite" everywhere) or removed them for later. I've messaged Tacopill and Justin these suggestions, but it seems the induction was already decided and there was no incentive to make changes. This thread is unsettling, because it seems like no one else mattered outside of Xizor, Mandi, Mel, and Justin. Anywho, the deed is done and I'm not protesting it, just stating my opinion so everyone knows my stance on the most divisive current issue (adding the startups), so they can make a fully informed decision about me one way or the other.

To sum it all up, NIWA can't help anything grow if people think it's our fertilizer and reject it on the first visit, so yeah, we ought to reject every startup application on the first submission and list things they need to do beforehand-minor things mainly. And the most important part, talk to them, and/or help them.

Sorry for the long post, but that's what I had to say.

I have no idea why people haven't made all of those a userbox. Although I am interested in see where the method leads. I'll be adding that NIWA userbox and putting that Kirby EAT IT vid next time I do userpage work. :P

Animal Crossing Wiki, possibly needs even less. What they have is basic, yeah, but it flows nicely. I suppose a few apps on the page to give it a wiki feel would be good.
We're definitely looking to improve our home page. What we have up now actually has not changed since the beta before the wiki's release. I mean, who actually uses square corners anymore? :P

I'm not proficient in "wikiCode" just yet. I much prefer HTML and CSS. If there's anyone out there who would like to offer us a helping hand, please send me a quick PM and we'd be more than grateful for your services. We're really working our hardest to prepare ourselves for the day that we will be able to join NIWA, and having a great front page to match the others is a requirement in my mind.

Steve seems very interested in designing a skin for AC Wiki. In skype, he's been getting opinions from us on various AC textures. So I'm certain something awesome is in the works. And that app we discussed in the AC forums is so exciting. I'm not sure if I'll be at work all this weekend or just tonight, but I plan to look further into it and get the ball moving.

Have you guys met the great Moydow? He's a coding master imo. While working with him on the personalization templates at WiKirby, he managed to make it work before I could even finish a preview of tweaks in the sandbox! So if possible, I'd like to share the project with him. He, like me, may have never played an AC game, but might still be able to assist with core features like that.

I'm heading to work tonight, but when I get off and have time to test it out backwards and forwards after adding it; I'll do just that. I can't imagine it would be different in any browsers, so the only test I really want to try is what it does without a real name set in preferences.

But anytime I do something in ftp I check it logged in/logged out for both IE and FF just to be sure.

I think I know what's wrong here.

Try both of these links

and

The difference is whether or not it has the "www." prefix. My bookmarks tend to give me the shorter urls.

Yeah I talk to Amy(Yusei) in skype a lot and she said she had hosting, had the wiki installed and just needed a domain name. So I shelled out the 2 bucks for a .info :P We figure it would be good for SEO if someone were to search "Fire Emblem info" or whatever.
