NIWA Discussion / Re: Your wiki doing anything special for the holidays?
« on: December 18, 2010, 05:34:35 PM »
If you haven't noticed already, the colors on ACWiki change automatically based on the season. So right now, everything is all blue and snowy. (Thanks to Moydow's help!)

Christmas is also the time when Jingle comes to town, so we've put up a nice countdown on the main page as well.

ParserFunctions is also a very useful extension.

Yes, this is true. I'm blocked as well. It also has my IP address wrong. This leads me to believe that there's something wrong with the IP address recognition.

Thanks for bringing this up. I'm sure that when one of the NWiki staff members reads this, they'll be able to offer an official explanation and fix. :)

I'd recommend going to communities/fansites and seeing if any of them will give you a quick shoutout. I'm sure a lot of Earthbound Forums have members that write fanon and would be willing to contribute.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Improving NIWA
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:16:48 PM »
Okay, let me rephrase my question: What purpose does such a large staff serve?
I don't think you can look at the NIWA staff like a traditional forum team. We're more like 'representatives'. We discuss and propose ideas for our wikis, and ensure that the voice of every member wiki is heard. The administrators are the true staff members, as they are the only ones with complete forum moderation tools. We're currently looking into the activity of administrators, and may make some changes at some point in the future.

So in reality, NIWA only has about 9 actual 'staff members'.

Why is the NIWA staff so large?

There are seventy-seven members. Judging from the first page, fifty-three percent have ten or less posts; thirty-seven percent have five or less posts; and twenty percent have one or no posts.
The NIWA staff is comprised of representatives from each wiki. The number of representatives is solely up to the directors of each wiki. As you can tell, the lack of posts from many staff members makes up for the large number that we have. Some staff members will be more active than others, but they're all there just in case they ever have something to say.

I created the wiki in hopes it would someday be able to join NIWA.

That's a long ways away, :b
All I can say is that you should never give up! My team and I rebuilt Animal Crossing Wiki from 0 articles to 200 twice before finally merging with Animal Crossing Wikia. The key is just to put a great amount of care into your wiki, and support its needs as time goes on. It may not take as long as you think.

Best of luck! :)

Animal Crossing Wiki:
Templates used by main page can be edited.
Cascading protection, my friend. Actually the smarter approach as opposed to just protecting everything as we go along. (You never know when someone will forget something.) Next time try to be a bit more thorough in your research. ;)

Animal Crossing / An Animal Crossing Christmas

Jingle will soon be coming to town, so what do you want for Christmas?

You can view a complete list of items on this page, and you can also see this page for more information on how you can get as many items as possible.

What items do you have already, and what items do you want Jingle to give you this year? :)

NIWA Discussion / Re: Speculation time.
« on: December 12, 2010, 04:05:36 AM »
I've said this before, but I would like to see NIWA expand into video games in general. With the imminent fall of Wikia, there's too many potentially good non-Nintendo wikis that are about to be orphaned. Then again, my opinion doesn't really matter in this case. If Grand Fuhrer/Kaiser/Emperor/Czar Tacopill(Maxite knows it will happen, at least) wants it that way, it will be that way.
I think that an independent video game wiki alliance would most likely be formed outside of NIWA. It's true that it could include all the NIWA members, but that doesn't mean that NIWA has to be the one to form such a large alliance. I think that NIWA is doing the best at what it aims to to, which is unite independent Nintendo wikis.

I'm surprised that Pikmin can support an entire wiki around itself. It's two games. Yet they managed to do it. I suspect that other series that have limited number of games can do the same, it just depends on what all they have to play with and what they agree to play with.
Pikmin may only have two games, but it has a lot of elements to it. Enemies, locations, strategies, Pikmin, and the story all make up over 1,200 articles on that wiki. It's really impressive to see how great a job the Pikmin wiki editors have done.

Also, to quickly announce this before tacopill beats me to the punch: The server-side updates are going through right now. Wikibound.info should be up in one to two days (barring any further difficulties)
Actually, it seems to be working right now! I'll update my interwiki table! :)

As Axiomist said earlier, the creation of a .wiki TLD would be ideal. I think that .info is as close as we can get to a relevant domain, even if the extension suffers from a history of abuse.

First the initiative to create a wiki must take place. Then, if it joins, it'll be sort of like the Mario Wiki and Donkey Kong Wiki situation. Except, I PRESUME that N-Wiki won't cover as much about the game, now that there's the standalone wiki.

And the 200 article thing is outdated, as shown in staff discussions.
I haven't had the chance to read through all the staff discussions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume it's now that there just has to be enough content to justify the creation of a wiki.

That would require more than 200 articles on one subject, but I'm sure it would be possible as long as there are people dedicated to the series and someone willing to set up/host the wiki.

I should've mentioned earlier that you shouldn't change the nameservers until the host is ready. That white screen you saw earlier was zelda-temple's server rejecting your request and saying there is no site with that domain on the server. :P

I apologize for leaving that out. For now the domain redirect should be fine until the host is ready.

I'd have to say The Wind Waker. The plot was very well thought out, in my opinion.

Call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed sailing too. :P

I'd like to help you guys get this sorted out. It goes without saying that the more simple a domain is, the easier it will be for people to remember it and come back. It's for that reason that a lot of users on my wiki are in support of a change from 'animalcrossingwiki.me' to 'nookipedia.com', named after one of the most notable characters in the game. (And yes, I own the domain. Domain squatters - better luck elsewhere. :P)

Maxite - Do you have the ability to change the nameservers of the domain? That's the only thing you'll need to do on your end. The rest is up to the host on zelda-temple. :)

The 301 redirect only needs to be set up on the old domain. In order to get the new domain working correctly, you may need to contact the host on zelda-temple and ask them to set up your hosting as an addon-domain instead of a sub-domain. Then, all you need to do is point wikibound.info at the zelda-temple nameservers and it should work just fine. :)

I'm not sure what's going on as far as your URL, but this is how to do a 301 redirect. It's actually really simple!

Create a file named '.htaccess' in the root of the old wiki location. Put this text within:
Code: [Select]
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://wikibound.info/$1 [R=301,L]

Just change the http:// part to the URL path of your new site. $1 will be replaced by the page title, just as it is with interwiki linking. If you need any help with this, I'd be more than glad to assist. :)
