What do you guys think of a Nintendo news blog run by the NIWA community?

I think it would be great from a publicity stand point. Many of the smaller wikis like Lylat Wiki and Wars Wiki are struggling to find a community. If we were to start a blog, we could link to an article on an appropriate wiki each time news pops up about that subject. Not only would this bring in potential editors, it would drive up traffic which could pull wikis higher up on Google search results.

Beyond that, the news blog could bring a sense of unity/centralization among the NIWA members. This point would be especially true if each wiki (or each wiki that wants to) was allowed one or two writers on the blog. That writer would be in charge of all the articles for his or her franchise. This would give the project the feel that it's a sum of all the wikis' work.

As a side consideration, NIWA may be able to generate some revenue which could be poured into advertising, temporary hosting space (for developing wikis), web design software, etc.

Some wikis already do this, so it would be an easy venture for them to join. For example: http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Amity_Meadow_distribution_details_revealed. That example also shows how links could be integrated into an article.

I'd just like to hear some thoughts on this.

But Vim and Firebug are free.

(...I'm sure someone in a position to decide whether something should be said about something will say whatever later, so I don't really need to reply to the topic.)

so, your thinking of an equivalent to Bulbanews for all of NIWA? (especially one's without a community?)

KidIcarus

Yes, but more spiffed up I guess. Bulbanews looks more like a newspaper. There's nothing wrong with that; I assume that's a decision they made to compliment the formal tone of an encyclopedia. But, if the proposed blog wants to gain a following, it may want to take the look of a more casual blog.

http://kotaku.com/

Those are two that I follow. I think a layout like that would be better to develop a community.

Well, one day. Something may come up that's similar to this. But it won't be shown until it's ready.

Also, i can't wait until you join us in the staff. You certainly have a lot of good ideas, and i would love to have you collaborate with us on ideas like this.

Koroku

Ooooh, I'd love to be involved in this. :>

But please, no Wiki software for it... it just doesn't work all that well. D: That was one of the reasons that I had my own Bulbanews-like thing back in the day, wiki doesn't lend itself well to a news/blog-like thing.

[small]Can I run it and get into the staff that way? I already am forced into the Skype chat...[/small]

Well, that's up to the staff.

Stick around long enough, pitch in with our wiki's and our affiliates, and we will see.

Are there any other wiki's out there wikimon or yourself could associate with? possibly offer hosting? if not, are there any franchises that you could start up a wiki on a franchise you enjoy.

Especially Nintendo ones.

Thanks, I can hardly wait myself. I've been looking forward to getting into your exclusive club!  ;D

Ny idea is to make a bi weekly , The Shroom-like newspaper (with actual news on Nintendo, unlike The Shroom)

Just my two cents, it's a good idea - until you realize you're surrounded by every top blog and website dedicated to Nintendo, and even websites like IGN, and GameSpot that get a good chunk of Nintendo stuff. I like the idea, but I don't know how to fare this.

Maybe a better idea would be to affiliate with GoNintendo (a blog website that drops in more than a dozen pieces of news everyday in quick readable pieces and had a link to it's source) and have the hyperlinks that link to NIWA's respective wikis, but that's just my thought.

BTW, I accidentally picked the first option of the poll. I was supposed to pick the second one. Sorry about that.

Greenpickle

Wouldn't the idea be NIWA news or MediaWiki/general wiki guides/stories/tips?

I know this was a long time ago, but is something like this still in the works?

Maxite

I think a NIWA blog wouldn't be such a terrible idea. Yes, there are a ton of blogs that cover Nintendo already, but having an official NIWA one would serve several functions
1. It would help keep visitors within the "NIWA Network"
2. We'd have control over coverage
3. We can link to the appropriate wikis (and/or affiliates) ourselves

I'd be more than happy to help out on such a project.

Okay. A few (minor) obstacles:

1. What would the name of it be?
Here are some of my suggestions:
* Nintendo News Network (N3)
* NIWA News Network
* NIWA News

2. Software?
I think Wordpress would be pretty simple and easy to use for this. It's open, it's free, and it's modifiable (just like MediaWiki). It's also incredibly easy to use.

3. Hosting?
Need someone to host it. Be silly to have a NIWA news blog not be independent.

=====

A suggestion suddenly occurs to me:
Have it hosted on the niwanetwork.org domain, and use Wordpress software. Voila, NIWA Network News.

tacopill

just so people know, i am attempting to start talks on this again, staff side.

Koroku

So, if there was any discussion on this, I'm still in.

It's summer and I'm ~bored~...

KidIcarus

looks like NIWA took care of this in the form of twitter updates
