Now, I'm giving this it's own topic rather than shoving it into the affiliation request topic... it doesn't really fit there anyway.

So, I was thinking on where I could try and get Wars Wiki affiliated to, and I came across Gamehiker's Nintendo Wiki. They have some affiliations- see the top of the page for a dropdown, but I was wondering- why don't we see if they're interested in joining the cause? They say themselves that they're focused upon only first- and second-party Nintendo games, and while I don't know what the higher-ups think about having a general wiki on board, I feel it deserves at least some consideration.

I'd just like to say I'm NOT involved with them... I just stumbled upon them on Google, and so I'm working on an affiliation for myself, but thought it would be nice of me to share.

What are people's thoughts?

tacopill

it would technically fit, as it's: independent, focused on nintendo, free, and doesn't displace any existing members. But would they subscribe to the manifesto?

if it doesn't get membership, i'd like to recommend a new category be created to be between affiliate and member, for any other wiki's that are in a similar situation.

Tucayo

That seems like a good wiki. I will bring it to the staff

I definitely want to talk to them, it seems they would make a good addition to the NIWA resource pool. There's a bit of overlap in content coverage, I just browsed their Zelda stuff, but most of it is characters and games. ZW covers everything else like places, items, weapons, etc. Of course if they are willing to join us I wouldn't request they purge those pages or anything. I think a sweet deal could be made, for instance: to just link to ZW in Zelda articles, and ZW link to them for anything that's currently being linked to Wikipedia. That way everybody keeps their content and is happy.

It seems this is very fitting of the description of a potpourri wiki we discussed which would cover EVERY Nintendo game, (Nintendo as a publisher, not as in everything playable on a Nintendo system fyi). Of course we all know we offer them a much larger user base and shared technical expertise.

Update: I just sent one of their active staff members an overview of NIWA and my contact details. I figure to talk to them to gauge their interest, and any decision would be made in the private boards here.

Edit2: I unlocked this in case Masamune wants to talk about GameHiker in here.

onetwentysix

why not, it has 2,172 articles, enough to join the NIWA. Besides, it is about only Nintendo stuff.

Masamune

Well, I'm Masamune the webmaster of Gamehiker. I figure I'll go ahead and give you a rundown of the site.

The site was launched back in 2001 as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Video Games" as a fairly uncomprehensive encyclopedia on Nintendo games. It became gamehiker.com in 2003 and went through several different changes before we finally went with the wiki format in January of 2007.

Our focus has always been on Nintendo 1st and 2nd Party games and their various universes that exist in them. Our primary focus has been on games and characters in terms of articles written. We try to provide entries on most stuff, but a combination of how much there is to cover in the entire Nintendo universe and the fact that the bulk of the wiki has been written by about four people over the years hasn't quite got us to that lofty goal just yet. We're not really geared towards being as comprehensive as fandom-specific wikis. A lot of stuff that would earn individual entries on other wikis generally are sorted out into lists on Gamehiker.

Aside from the wiki itself, Gamehiker sports one of the largest (if not the largest, it's been awhile since I checked) Nintendo image galleries. Unfortunately the gallery isn't maintained as much as it was in the past, but all that stuff is still there. Waiting to be pillaged and such.

In any case, nothing has been decided yet. Everything's still being talked about. So when something happens, I guess you guys will find out. Eventually.

tacopill

sounds like a fun place to be. I think i will pillage some of the image galleries for the wiki's i help out on....(of course, credit will be given to you guys for providing it)

It;s weird how a wiki as big as this went unnoticed for so long, but it seems like they would be great members.

If anything, the image archives are worth an affiliation-- they have many more images of sprites and whatnot for the Wars series then we do at WW.

I'm not sure if non-staff should know, as the staff boards are private for a reason.  But, I can tell you that we wil get more opinions as more staff post.

I didn't see the point of making spritesheet pages when three websites (two public and easy to find: GH and AWN) have it all between them, and it's a waste of our time to re-rip images so we can say we haven't nicked them. It was right at the bottom of any priority list, I'll put it that way.

I see no problem with grabbing it off of there site, so long as you source them in doing so. They provided a service, they should get at least some credit in it.

Unfortunately, I ripped units sprites before knowing of AWN or Gamehiker, so they're still sitting on my hard drive. Now all that I'll need to rip is the start position pics for mission page infoboxes.

Also, are GH's archives released under a CC license or something? I couldn't find any documentation for them.

I'll talk about WW stuff on WC since you know, it fits in there and not here.

And GH I know we just have to give credit. It's the done thing, regardless of what they say... unless somebody says you can't use their stuff.

good to hear.

I fully agree on the image galleries, a lot of the Wiki's rising up, like Wikirby are lacking images, most images we could use otherwise are from Wikias... >_____>

I doubt I'm the only one that plays other Nintendo games. See this article! I couldn't have made that article on any of our member wikis. There may be some trivia to add to so far only Zelda Wiki, but since I can't find the rest of the puzzles in that branch yet, it may not manifest to anything at all.

But if the rest of the Hero's Shield, Hero's Sword, and Hero's Boots puzzles continue to feel Zeldaish and actually contain a dead give away that it's a reference, then I can add the trivia to the cameos page and link to GameHiker for a full article instead of Wikipedia. Last I checked the GameHiker article I wrote beat the snot out of the Wikipedia one!
