It's because of behaviour like this that I detest Wikia

This may be old news for some, but I've only just become aware of it....and it makes my blood boil.

Bulbapedia members will know that Bulbapedia many years ago founded the Encyclopaediae Pokémonis, and that we carry the following box on the front page of all our member wikis
Quote
Encyclopaediae Pokémonisis a group of open-content Pokémon encyclopedias in several languages.
Deutsch (German): PokéWiki
English: Bulbapedia
Español (Spanish): Pokéteca
Français (French): Poképédia
??? (Japanese): ????Wiki
Polski (Polish): Wikinezka
Português (Portuguese): LANDpedia

What Wikia has done now is intentionally go out to try and confuse that brand, with the front page of their wikis proclaiming
QuoteEncyclopaedia Pokémedia is a group of free Pokemon wikis in different languages.

English: Pokémon Wiki
Spanish: WikiDex
Deutsch: German
French: Français
Polish: Polska
Japanese: ???
Portuguese: Poké Wiki

I'm a marketing academic by trade, so I know exactly why they've done it...and as a marketer I have to say that while it's an effective and some would argue legitimate tactic....it's cowardly and shows both a lack of personal pride, and a lack of respect for consumers (ie. our visitors and the wider fan community). Disgusting.

wait, so the German Pokemon wiki isn't called "German"? I feel so disappointed.....

Anyway, i agree that this makes me sick.

This is nonsense. Some Wikia's don't even help you all that much. I went on Monster Hunter Wikia, and I looked at a resource map, I wanted to see what something meant. BUUUT on the map, it says...

"If you do not know what each symbol means, then too bad."

WTF

Look for Big Red on the Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Private Servers.

People don't have to put money into running a Wikia. Some people just set one up and forget about it after a month or so. When you have to pay to run it, for things like a domain name and MySQL software, it's usually a given that you'll put effort into it. But of course, Wikia don't care about that. They don't care that there are real fans out there who have sacrificed time and money to make sure that they can give people the best quality information. They only care about how much money they're bringing in, and will attempt to buy out and eliminate anyone who gets in their way, as shown by Angela Beesley and her many failed offers (and almost certainly failures to come) to Archaic for Bulbapedia.

Welcome to Wikia! Can I screw over your wiki with poorly hidden theft of ideas, today?

And people wonder why we can't get along with them...

Take it as a compliment: their version sucks, because you got the one and only good one. Plus, they secretly want to be us. :P

So true.

Level 3

And they go and make stupid offers on Bulbapedia itself.

If you can't buy it, rip it off! That's the Wikia way!

This adds to my hate for Wikia. They have no pride. I did start out learning Wikitext on wikia BEFORE they acted with such horrible marketing strategies. They even simplified their wikitext editor into a rich text editor.. What the heck? You can not code anything... Jeez wikia.. I unliked you on Facebook..  ;)

Volatile Dweevil

The Wikia staff honestly don't care. I left a comment on one of their talk pages and POOF, a day later, the comment was gone, it didn't even show up in the edit history.

Your Honor, i would like to present to the court Exhibit A: A message from Wikia asking me not to tell people where to edit.

That you were.

Level 3

The court accepts this into Evidence. [Wikia Staff's Stupidity updated in the Court Record]

In all seriousness, that is pretty pathetic though. Wikia is trying to get the users out of the loop, and KEEP them out of the loop.
