Title: MediaWiki Designers' Helpdesk
Post by: Justin on June 17, 2010, 01:57:57 AM
Do you work with PHP? Do you know about MySQL? If so, have you considered becoming a Mediawiki hacker? This thread is for your questions regarding the wiki interface. If you're trying to write an extension but you're stuck, feel free to ask away!

I think the Help Desk takes care of this.  However, if it is filled with more questions than we can answer, especially these kinds, we could split it.  And, if there are soo many questions that not even two threads can hold them (this is if we have a ton of activity), there could be a subsection... or they could all go in this section and all the other threads could be sticked.

Dude, this is a bit different. Not many people work with the interface itself :P

But we'll see if it's necessary. If not, then I'm not going to fight for it ;P

[admin]Austin, stop editing other people's posts. Consider this a warning.[/admin]

Never mind

He edited your post, it says « Last Edit: Today at 04:39:37 PM by ????  »  so, unless you had porn or something like that in your post, there is no valid reason to edit it. It is also the second time I see him doing that

I edited in a warning to Tacopill for going a bit off topic, but then edited it out because I didn't want to go doing that again.

Also, please PM me a warning instead of this. :L

Oh, I am sorry, then. The warning will be removed.

Sorry again, will do so next time. I am used that in the MW forums warnings are public.

I know a bit of php and MYSQL enough to fix errors or mess ups but not enough to code by hand.

That's about my level (for now). Though one problem I couldn't fix was this (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24986), which happened when I tried to install Mediawiki 1.16. It's.. long :P but they say you should give every line when reporting errors. I don't have a clue what's wrong, and the one person who did reply didn't really help (tl;dr is just pointless). Anyone here got any ideas?

i was actually thinking of designing a few extensions myself. But before i do so, i need to learn how extensions work, go deeper in to how the mediawiki software works, etc.

But i can teach the basics to anyone who would like to know.

And sorry, moydow...i'd like to help....but i don't know where to begin.

If you want to write extensions, you need to have an understanding of PHP.

About your problem...I've never seen that before, so I'm afraid I can't help. Sorry.

Don't worry about it; I managed to find the problem. It appears the arrows in next and prev page links aren't recognised by WIN1252. I had to edit each one out of the SQL manually. :/ But it works now! :)

Not sure where to post this, but does anyone know how to add a background-image to a table like Mario Wiki has it? >_<;

Either thread will do, really... but this thread leans more towards MediaWiki in the form of PHP, MySQL, etc.

Actually, i was referring to the style-based tip, rather than css.

But thank you for the expansion on the explanation.

Hi,

I have a question about MediaWiki.

I wanted to make my own wiki, but when I downloaded MediaWiki and PHP, they both came with a bunch of folders with files I couldn't open.

Can someone help me understand what they are, maybe make a tutorial on MediaWiki?

Because I wanted to make a wiki of "The Legendary Starfy"...

Have you installed 7-Zip? 7-Zip is needed on Windows to open .tar.gz files, which is what they are contained in.

No, but I used WinRAR to extract it, and the folders and files were what I extracted. Should I have been more specific on that?

Yes, WinRAR works too. But if you want this to go online, you'll need to arrange hosting (at a price, of course). If this is just a test install for your own personal use, you'll need more than just the MediaWiki files and PHP, namely the Apache server, and an SQL server, either Postgres or MySQL.

Okay, so how do I do that?

Is there some sort of tutorial for this I could find?

Are you looking to run it off your computer, or off of a webhost like Blue host (http://www.bluehost.com/) or Dream host (http://www.dreamhost.com/)?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that... I just want to make a wiki...

He means, A. do you want to be the only person who can use it, or B. do you want it to be live, online, on the internet? If A, you don't need a hosting service. If B, you need to purchase hosting from a company like those Tacopill mentioned.

Exactly. I pay about $100 a year to host wikis (in 2 year intervals). If renting a webhost is not an option for you, maybe ask around and see if anyone is interested in offering free services to wikis?

Okay, thanks, I'll see what I can do to start up my first wiki.

All of the templates on SmashWiki that use Template:Navbox are currently generating a redlink in the top-left corner because the link is being made without the Template: namespace prefix.

For example, Template:SSBMStages (http://www.ssbwiki.com/Template:SSBMStages) has a useless redlink to "SSBMStages" where there should be a link to "Template:SSBMStages".

However, after trying to figure out what in Template:Navbox (http://www.ssbwiki.com/Template:Navbox) was causing the issue, I was stumped.  Anybody know how to fix this?

You don't have StringFunctions (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:StringFunctions) installed, which is messing up {{Tnavbar}} (the thing that generates the view, discuss, edit links). Since that isn't installed, {{#pos}} doesn't work and just posts as plain wikitext, so {{#if:{{#pos:{{{1}}}|:}}||Template:}} is always true, so it never returns the Template: part.
