I thought about it and we should have a Video Game Music Wiki or a Nintendo Music Wiki.
I for one love video game music and would love to take part in such a project.
Anyone have any thoughts/responses?

Hmm....I can see a lot of potential crossover here. Most of the various game wikis would cover music from their own franchise I'd expect, and N-wiki would likely cover all the Nintendo game music together. A universal video game music wiki though? Hmmm.....I get the feeling I've seen something like that before. More a database than a wiki I think it was though. Where did I see that...

Finally, a subject matter that actually crosses rather deeply into my fields of expertise. I vote for the larger, and more inclusive "Video Game Music", as I think that allows for much more opportunity to cover interesting topics.

Yeah I imagined it'd be something like Strategy Wiki on that matter.

Well wikia has a Sonic Music Wiki (or something of that sort).
Otherwise the idea popped into my head while reading the Improving NIWA thread.

I've said this before, but I'd be strongly interested in seeing this. I do panels at a couple anime conventions, and most of my panels are music-related in some fashion. Although IMO sitting for an hour talking about music in front of a public crowd is easier than editing the same information into a wiki, I'd be eager to add articles (and categories) to such a wiki. Granted, my emphasis is more on cultural impact than it is on strictly the music.

A wiki about music doesn't necessarily post music just like a wiki about video games doesn't necessarily post video games

Yes it necessarily does. It would be pointless to have such a wiki if music wasn't uploaded to the site. The problem is people can also easily download it. And it has to be shared to the website.

Well, then you only have samples, of appropriate length and quality for whatever commentary you need to make.

I was thinking that too, get a sample of about 30 seconds in length at max and upload that rather than a whole song, sor if like Wikipedia does.

Wikipedia also uses OGG-file type, which as far as i know, is harder to play on a standalone player or non-web software. This, however doesn't prevent someone from downloading the ogg, and then converting it to a MP3. It is still an option, though.
Also, i believe Seritinajii (http://www.niwanetwork.org/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=184), knows of a music wiki (but it might be a general one, not Video Game Specific). So, you might want to ask him about it.

Harder? Than what? I don't see anything difficult in downloading one of however many FOSS Vorbis players there are, and I don't see why you'd intentionally convert it to MP3, which is inferior both technically and with regard to the legal issues surrounding its use.

Harder in the sense it's not well known. For example, i don't even no what a "FOSS Vorbis players" is. Not to mention, if it were not to convert it to a MP3, i couldn't play it on my MP3 player.
I also don't know if iTunes can convert OGG directly to an iPod-ready format.
Are there any ogg-ready, standalone devices that work on a Windows-environment?

Uh, if we're talking about fair use of VG music, why are you talking about putting them on a device made solely for listening to them?

You should already have VLC installed anyway; it does everything (yes, before anyone says anything, this is an exaggeration; I'm still waiting for the option to mix stereo audio).

The reason i bring it up, is i know quite a few people who download music for the purpose of placing them on portable music players.
So if one were to find a place that held a specific song, in it's entirety and in the OGG format, pinpoint the file on the server, select "Save as", download the file, convert it to a format needed to be played, they would be set. And if enough people get word of said place, the people running the site could get in trouble; as in legal trouble.
The problem with this scenario is: i haven't heard anybody click "Save as" on an OGG file. I'd image it be as easy as doing the same for JPEG, i just haven't put much thought into it up to now - hence why i thought it was good suggestion at the time.
Anyway, last i checked on this, VLC wasn't good at watching subbed anime, so i stopped using it a few years ago. But that's for a different thread.
