Mario / Re: Favorite Mario Games? (Spin-offs included)
« on: August 07, 2014, 01:28:59 AM »
Yoshi's Island and Wario Land 2 (if that counts) are probably my favourites. Super Mario Bros. 2 (Doki Doki Panic, not Lost Levels) may come in third. Super Mario World has the best movement/physics engine out of any Mario platformer for me, but the badly balanced items and rather lackluster level design harm it a lot. The Game Boy Adance remake only made it even more cheesy instead of fixing anything.

The 3D games are the most fun to watch someone else play, but I don't like playing them myself.

I think articles on games that are only licensed by Nintendo like Digmon Racing should be deleted, unless Nintendo did play a role in the development of such a game in someway.
I believe the Digimon and the Simpsons game articles were created not for any justified reason related to the wiki's stated purpose of Nintendo coverage, but as a special benefit to Wikimon and Wikisimpsons for affiliating with NIWA (so yes, N Wiki's catering to NIWA members and affiliates instead of treating itself like an independent entity has been going on for a while).

And speaking of independent entities,
*Game articles only when there is no member wiki to link to.
I personally feel it would harm N Wiki's alleged independency even more if even major subjects like Super Mario Bros. are covered off-wiki (not to mention the creation of an inconsistency in coverage, the reason for which is in no way apparent when viewing N Wiki as a seperate entity from NIWA) for apparently no other reason than to not "steal" traffic from the member wikis. I think what we should be looking for is something that makes sense for N Wiki as its own entity; the most common criticism of it is that it's nothing but a puppet wiki operated by other NIWA members to promote the network, and deciding to entirely ditch such coverage for other wikis' benefit would only take that further. And, as was brought up on Skype recently, if there is no independency, what's N Wiki even doing in NIWA (an independent wiki alliance) as a proper member?

That said, even thinking of other members' benefit, I believe covering the games in their own articles can actually work better for that than just putting outgoing links into a table, as the articles are more likely to show up in web searches etc. and are already interlinking to other members for more info (they also cover blurbs and have the potential to cover a lot of technical information, which are not covered on the focus wikis). I continue to be perfectly fine with the Kirby articles on N Wiki, for one.

NintendoWiki discussion / Re: "Donkey Kong (disambiguation)" page
« on: September 10, 2013, 06:35:24 PM »
It is an identifier. Someone who is looking through that list might not know that it is an disambiguation page from the list. They may link to "Donkey Kong" thinking they are going to the character.
They can still link to Donkey Kong and it will show up as a blue link, only it's a redirect to the disambiguation page instead of a direct link. If anything, it causes more confusion the way it is, as the fact that the disambiguation page has parentheses after the name indicates that there is a seperate "Donkey Kong" page (possibly about the character), but it isn't actually the case. It's misleading in this manner, and there's no advantage (it's pretty clear from the page's contents that it's a disambiguation (it should even have a notice pointing this out), and other pages don't pointlessly tell people what they are in the title; if they did, we would end up with "Category:Games (category containing games)" or "Help:Contents (index of the help pages)").

NintendoWiki discussion / Re: "Donkey Kong (disambiguation)" page
« on: September 09, 2013, 11:44:14 PM »
My opinion on the matter is that all disambiguation pages should have "(disambiguation)" in the title, that way you can link to them in related templates, or know when they have been linked to in Special:Whatlinkshere
And you can't do that when they don't have it in the title? The current "Donkey Kong" page simply leads to the disambiguation page, it's just an unnecessary redirect in-between and an unnecessarily long title for the proper page.

NintendoWiki discussion / "Donkey Kong (disambiguation)" page
« on: September 06, 2013, 01:29:51 AM »
There currently is a page named "Donkey Kong (disambiguation)" on the wiki even though there is no page named "Donkey Kong"; that title simply redirects to "Donkey Kong (disambiguation)". The latter should be moved to "Donkey Kong" as no addition in parentheses is required to disambiguate it from anything, and typing in "Donkey Kong" leads there anyway except with a redirect in-between.

(I am aware this is a trivial issue, but tacopill made me post it on the forum.)

Nintendo Gaming / Re: GameSpot's Greatest Game Series of the Decade
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:25:40 AM »
I don't even know most of those series. I tried to vote for some I do know, but apparently I have to sign up, which isn't likely to happen. Kirby isn't even in, so it doesn't strike me as a particularly good representation of anyone's opinion anyway aside from that of a specific crowd. Heck, not even Pokémon is on there. Sad.

NintendoWiki discussion / Re: What should happen with the Metroid page?
« on: August 26, 2013, 02:21:52 AM »
"Metroid" into a disambiguation page, linking to the Metroid series, the first game and the article on Metroids (the creatures) on Metroid Wiki. "Classic NES series: Metroid" and similar ones should redirect either to the first game or perhaps the "Classic NES series" article, regardless of what happens to "Metroid", as that title can never refer to the series (or the creature). As for the general way to handle it for similar cases where a game has the (exact) title of the series, I am all for disambiguations, as I don't think either meaning is necessarily more "expected" than the other.

NIWA Discussion / Re: WiKirby is broked
« on: August 18, 2013, 04:11:09 PM »
At this point I have to say, Vellidragon you (aside from me) are the only other reason that WiKirby still exists. I've expressed this to you via email before, but let me say publicly that your tenacity and enthusiasm as WiKirby's only day-to-day admin has been essential, and is truly appreciated.
Thank you. I too have had an important position to fill when Josh died (that of a lead admin who deals with content rather than server issues), and I'm not sure how well I have been doing in that (I had hoped that more quality editors would stay around to help than has usually been the case so far, though that's not to say there haven't been any), but it's nice to know my efforts appreciated.

but at the critical point I was the ONLY person who could do so.
Well, there were other tech-savvy people around at the time who access could have been shared with to to help maintain it; but no reason to fret about that now.

I haven't read the other post yet, but I'm sorry as well for reacting harshly to this. The last weeks especially have been very, very frustrating and worrying in regards to WiKirby with all the uncertainties and difficulties, and I'm sure others involved can agree on that. I'm not one to remain angry for long though, and as long as you're willing to work with us here to ensure the site's future (which you apparently are), I see no reason to be sour right now. Thank you again for the work and money you did invest into the site; it has been much appreciated, even if the situation has not necessarily been ideal.

I'll be working hard to ensure that WiKirby is back online and error-free ASAP.
WiKirby is back online and free of the error of being outdated and inaccessible. It's found at wikirby.us now and is on Ringtailed Fox's server.
Quote
I had given Vellidragon and a few others my personal address (which I check regularly) and urged them to contact me there in case of any issues. To be fair, Velli did do this on the 9th of August, but the email ended up in my spam folder!
I recall using at least three different emails to contact you by. I can hardly have been the only one given the extent of the email campaign to reach you, and you also most certainly received personal messages, talk page messages and even messages on Facebook. If you are going to say you didn't see a single one of those or they all ended up in the "spam folder", then I'm sorry, but I find it difficult to believe that, not to mention that the problems with WiKirby were clearly visible just from visiting the website itself and would not even have required reading emails.
Quote
Anyway, regardless of problems getting in touch with me on this occasion, please rest assured that I'm neither uncontactable nor "gone". Nor am I apathetic to WiKirby's survival.
The situation over the past year or so has demonstrated otherwise. This is not a new issue. WiKirby's MediaWiki version was so outdated it was a wonder it was even still working and no extension, updating, etc. issues have ever been taken care of. Requests of that ilk have been downright ignored on a regular basis; I have been stuck with telling users of WiKirby that their server-related problems could not be handled because the only person with server access was impossible to reach. Downtimes, to my knowledge, have lasted up to three weeks in the past; that is not a sign of a healthy website or one that is checked on regularly by someone who has the time and motivation to put into keeping it alive.
Quote
I have no plans to discontinue my financial commitment to the project
I thank you for your financial commitment in the past, but the site has moved to Ringtail's server, so it is no longer needed at this point.

I'm sorry, but you have had enough chances to act responsibly, which you did not take. An entire email campaign was launched to get a hold of you - not only spanning this thread and the skype chat, but also some NIWA member wikis like SmashWiki - which you did not respond to (I still have not received a response to any email I sent and it appears to me you did not read any of them before posting this, and your apparently unknowingness that the site had even moved shows to me that you did not even bother to visit wikirby at all, even after renewing the domain, as the entire main page has been changed into a message stating just that). You have acknowledged in the past that you do not have time to take care of the server, yet you have consistently refused to share access to it with anyone to the point that the site had to be moved by exporting the pages as no one had any access to the server. NIWA staff as a whole has been aware of this for much longer; this entire situation has only been the inevitable climax of it all, and the wisest thing you can do (and which I humbly ask you to do) at this point is transfer ownership of the domain to Dillion (dkpat, who owns the .us domain) so we can point it to the new (updated and accessible to multiple tech people) site currently found at wikirby.us .

I, along with the rest of NIWA, thank you for your work on WiKirby while you were active (mainly while Axiomist was still alive), but I think it has become evident that the site needs to move on. You are free to continue contributing in whatever way you can, but the site's hosting duties are, at present, best left with someone else.

Congratulations!! Hope the new domain and server works well, and that the wikirby.com name works for you soon.
Thanks! If major problems pop up, we have Moydow and other active and tech-savvy people on board now with access to the server, so we're actually able to do something about that now. (We also are finally using an updated MediaWiki version; fairly exciting!)

As a reminder, the URL still needs to be changed to wikirby.us in a few places. Dragon Quest Wiki, Bulbapedia and Wars Wiki have yet to update (Strategy Wiki as well, but they have been informed), as well as the NIWA Network hub. It would also be nice to get a NIWA News announcement about the URL change. (EDIT: Thanks, Moydow!)

Important update! Adam has forsaken WiKirby entirely and it's in the process of moving to a new host. We have acquired the domain

http://www.wikirby.us/

for it (where it will be appearing soon), presumably a temporary solution until we are able to pick up wikirby.com (which is expiring later today but won't be available for about 30 days). There's also a new Facebook page for WiKirby (https://www.facebook.com/wikirby) where updates will be posted.

Please prepare to switch to the new URL when it's working, especially in interlinking on member wikis. Thanks in advance!

Apologies for the double post, but an update on this: Apparently, many pages are currently broken while using the wiki anonymously due to error pages being cached. If you come across such a page, please add  ?action=purge  at the end of the URL, confirm and click the "OK" button on the page that pops up; this should purge the cache for the page and make it visible again. There seems to be no way to do this for multiple pages as we still have no access to the server.

Adam has still been entirely unresponsive and we will need to keep trying to get a hold of him if we are going to prevent problems in the future (and wish to be able to do "fancy" stuff like actually updating the horribly outdated MediaWiki or installing the extensions that he has refused to cooperate on for at least the past two years). If we don't manage to reach him or he continues to refuse to share or transfer the server access despite admitting that he doesn't have the time to handle it by himself, the last resort is still a (clumsy) server move via the data that we exported from the site (which will likely pose problems as well if we cannot acquire the domain).

We don't know why.
In fact, we don't even know why it's better. Adam has yet to respond to me and I didn't hear about any responses from him to anyone else either.

Efforts have been made to export the pages while it's in a state that allows for doing so, and all the text content has been grabbed by now. All that's left is extracting the files. At least one person has a backup of the wiki skin as well, as far as I'm aware, so if Adam has forever disappeared, we could at least move the site to a different place to reduce the damage. Thanks everyone for the help with this!

Want a new host? I currently host Golden Sun Universe and Wikimon, and would be willing to take on WiKirby.
An easier to reach host would help, but unfortunately, the hosting also can't be moved with seemingly no way of reaching Adam, and even if there was one, he would most likely refuse to pass on the hosting or even share access with someone else experienced as he has been doing previously for Bast knows what arbitrary reasoning (as far as I can tell, he has mainly been using the "this is what Ax would have wanted" justification, though I'm fairly certain he wouldn't have wanted the site to rot away without anyone to actively take care of its server and software). He's very overprotective of the site and server even though he has rarely if ever been doing anything to either for quite a while (even when he was a bit more responsive, he has been unwilling to cooperate even on simple issues like installing extensions). Unless a miracle happens, I don't have any hope that anyone will be able to properly take over the hosting anytime soon unless some workaround surfaces.

What's happened with WiKirby lately? It's been having many downtime problems.
As of today, WiKirby is back online. Don't ask me why or for how long; the period between the last downtimes was only a few days. I haven't heard anything from Adam and he didn't put an explanation on WiKirby either; I don't know if he's even responsible for getting it back online or what on earth has been happening to it. It's certainly not profiting from the downtimes and lack of clarity on them (or even certainty that they will be looked into within any reasonable amount of time or at all).

The Lounge / Re: What's your favorite country?

there is so much mystery behind it (The DaVinci Code for example).
The da Vinci code is fictional and has no historical basis, if you weren't aware.

On-topic, there's a lot which I like... Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, the celtic parts of the United Kingdom, pretty much all of Scandinavia... Romania as well, and perhaps Liechtenstein. The Netherlands are nice, too, and I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a bunch here. I can't really decide on a specific country :S (Also, why is Vatican City in the poll but not Italy? o.o)

hey there... you don't have to be sad about that. don't let things like that upset you because no one said you were fat and i'm sure with the way media is, even skinny people think they are fat
I was sad that it's "over". It was a joke. I like being fat :3

*cough*
http://www.niwanetwork.org/forums/index.php?topic=1328.0

Maybe I can make a new thread only for NintendoWiki if the staff approves it. Since this thread been derailed pretty badly.
This thread is about NintendoWiki and RAP's post was perfectly on-topic, so I don't see your problem here.

@RAP: I recall all the stuff you had been compiling & writing up for the wiki, but I still don't understand what the point is of doing so in semi-secret over the course of several years instead of just releasing it to the general public as it is being worked on. A wiki tends to be a community project, and N Wiki certainly would have profitted from something that the community in general can actually help with (and more importantly provide feedback on) during those years that it has been dead and without direction now. It's great that you are spending time on planning things out, but such things should be worked on with the community imo; I am aware that there isn't one at this moment, but that's because all potential development/ideas have been limited to "authorised personnel" instead of attempting to involve users in anything or even keeping them updated; to my knowledge, everyone but a select few staff members is currently in the dark of what the plans for N Wiki are even supposed to be, and I just don't think that is how a wiki, especially one in need of community growth, is supposed to operate.

(But really, may I ask what's the point of DKWiki when Mariowiki also has the same articles, but better? Not trying to start a flame war here.)
As far as I'm aware, DK Wiki mainly exists because it migrated to independency from a Donkey Kong Wiki on Wikia, with its own community seperate from the Super Mario Wiki that didn't wish to merge with the latter. Mario Wiki approved their joining NIWA and DK Wiki has (or had at the point of joining) no problem with Mario Wiki's Donkey Kong coverage, so all is fine in that respect and it's probably a matter of personal preference which wiki you go to for Donkey Kong coverage (though NIWA interlinking usually encourages using DK Wiki). If any problems arise from the overlapping coverage, that'd probably be something that Super Mario Wiki and DK Wiki need to settle among themselves. As long as all wikis involved are okay with it, we could technically have an unlimited amount of wikis on the same subject in NIWA.

(I could have sworn there was a thread about this once, but I cannot find it anymore...)

the admins are inactive :(
Sorry for my inactivity, see my earlier post in this thread for explanation :( There aren't any other admins on WiKirby apart from me (except Adam, but he doesn't do much if anything on the site itself). If you urgently need someone with admin powers there, please notify me in some other way (e.g. through these fora) and I will look into it as soon as I have time. Thanks for checking on the wiki in my absence :3
