Mario / Re: Mario All-Stars Wii
« on: March 28, 2011, 05:26:18 PM »
I too managed to get a copy with the initial shipment of it. I won't say it was a regrettable purchase, but I was anticipating a little bit more out of it. Oh well, in the least, I got a legitimate piece of the 25th anniversary "birthday cake."

I presume Nintendo designed this compilation mostly with younger kids in mind, as they likely have neither played the game before, nor are they savvy enough to look up the same kind of historical info and music on the internet.

For people whom have not managed to get a copy, Nintendo of America had re-released the compilation in March for a second (and final) run! If you don't get your own copy this time, you'd have lost your chance... until probably in the next five years when Super Mario Bros. becomes 30!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: 3DS Miis as Wii guest Miis
« on: March 28, 2011, 05:09:53 PM »
Your concept does sound possible, however, I really doubt it could happen anyway as it is neither feasible nor profitable. Mii characters were fun at first, but nowadays only little kids and non/casual gamers consider them to be cute.

Personally, nowadays I consider my Mii character as a mere representative of my personal save file for particular games, and I would only take the time to design another Mii character if the Check Mii Out Channel (Mii Contest Channel in PAL Wii consoles) had any contests I would be interested in participating in.

The Nintendo 3DS does take integrated Mii character-related activities a little further, but not really that much. I do not currently own a Nintendo 3DS, so I don't really care at this point anyway.

Metroid / Re: Looking for SOMEONE who has Prime Trilogy
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:29:42 PM »
One of the great reasons the compilation is so incredibly rare is reportedly because, for an odd reason, Nintendo notably in North America and Australia had simply decided to discontinue printing any more copies merely a few months after it was first released. No official reasons were given for this, but it was likely due to the production cost of the custom-made metallic packaging the compilation disc was boxed in. It is not easy for a corners-cutting company like Nintendo to keep up. Some sites are even making a killing selling any unsold copies of the compilation at ridiculously high prices, which de-motivates people further at getting their hands on any of those left over or used copies.

As for myself, I was fortunate to actually find one of those rare copies in a little shop just a couple o' weeks ago! I managed to buy that copy before anyone else did! Apparently, nobody knew its real value, so I got it at the standard price of a Wii game too! Gosh, what are the chances for one to find a copy of the compilation in a shop over a year after it was discontinued!? So, yeah, anyway I'm basically saying I have a copy too, even though I have not played it much yet. If you're still interested in adding me anyway, send me a message with your Wii number, and I shall share mine in reply.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Kid Icarus Fans & Sites
« on: March 28, 2011, 02:22:57 PM »
Excuse me. Isn't the site Kid Icarus Shrine considered a Kid Icarus fansite? Although, granted, it is mostly focused on merely the first game (since it is one of the host's video game shrines), and it doesn't really have a community. Regardless, this site is ridiculously full on info about everything about the original Kid Icarus. You might find the site's archives very helpful indeed.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Are you a Nintendo nerd?

Isn't working and supporting an entire wiki network based on Nintendo games the deepest forms of Nintendo nerdiness around?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Hardest Nintendo game?
« on: December 09, 2010, 01:11:16 PM »
What part is hard? :6

Some people have difficulties reaching Pro status in certain sports. Titles such as Wii Sports require a lot of motion-handling, and it's not always easy to master a video game sport when one doesn't practice enough, or finds harder opponents too skillful to beat. It's similar to real-live sporting situations.

I also believe that the boxing sport is kinda glitchy: The controls are not always smooth in response apparently, and does not emulate hand-movements properly.

I find all games easy, but Wii Sports is the hardest.

If Wii Sports is hard, then you should try out Wii Sports Resort! You won't believe how much trickier true 1:1 motion is and is too much to handle!

Nintendo Gaming / Professor Layton: True Nintendo IP... or NOT!?
« on: December 09, 2010, 12:32:34 PM »
There currently seems to be some sort of confusion among a lot of people concerning the ownership of the Professor Layton series. Some people seem to agree that Professor Layton is an intellectual property (IP) of both Nintendo and the series' developer Level-5, whilst others claim despite Nintendo's significant contribution to the series, Nintendo does not own the Professor Layton IP at all!

I looked around, and checked which statement is more accurate. Turns out this confusion is mostly due the fact Professor Layton is exclusive to Nintendo consoles, and the series is entirely localised and published by Nintendo in both the United States and Europe. However, legally speaking, the Professor Layton is more or less a third-party series!

Nintendo never published the games in Japan; publishing in Japan was handled by Level-5 themselves, but since the company isn't that big enough they asked Nintendo to help them localise the games elsewhere. If any of you people check disclaimers and indices on any of the games' packagings and official media, you'd notice Professor Layton is copyrighted only to Level-5. No mention of copyright to Nintendo whatsoever, even outside of Japan (with exception of the Nintendo DS trademarks). Therefore, Nintendo does not legally own the Professor Layton IP anywhere in the world.

Keep in mind that Level-5 is an independent, private Japanese video game developing company, and is not a subsidiary of Nintendo at any extent. Level-5 had released dozens of games for different consoles, not just Nintendo ones, and many of these games still remain Japan-only releases. Although, I recently heard that the first game in the sports RPG series, Inazuma Eleven, will finally see release outside of Japan in 2011 (by Nintendo), but only in Europe so far.

So, what do you people think?

I am really hoping to get a copy of the game myself, but since I am currently on a low budget of sorts I fear I am not able to get it soon enough. Besides, I even have other titles I am itching to lay my hands on as well.

StarFox / Star Fox Wii or Star Fox HD?
« on: December 05, 2010, 10:15:05 PM »
So, it seems the only "new" Star Fox game in the horizon right now is a remake. It's going to be a very cool remake on a very cool brand new console, but still a remake of an old plot nonetheless. Ever since Star Fox Command, people have been asking where does the storyline really flow from there? The game made it so confusing with its nine super different endings.

Even after Star Fox 64 3D was unveilled, people are still anticipating the possibility that the true next Star Fox game will soon be announced, and more specifically for the Wii. Apparently, there seems to be no signs from any of the major console makers that they are to release successors soon, so it seems we are going to be stuck with the Wii for a couple more years at most. Then again, certain game series tend to skip consoles all the time. I'm pretty sure we never got to play any Metroid games on the Nintendo 64, albeit Samus Aran was in Super Smash Bros., but it wasn't a Metroid game, was it?

Anyway, what is the point I'm trying to make? Well, just that perhaps to know what you people may prefer. Regardless how the canon may continue, where and when do you guys prefer your next Star Fox game be? Do you guys prefer there be another game sooner, for the Wii, or allow Nintendo to take their time and release it later, for the next Nintendo console? By the way, Nintendo promised that the next console will most definitely support HD graphics that time around! Imagine how cool it would look with space textures and stuff!

I would have also mentioned a Star Fox 3D, but it looks like we're already getting one. Unless, of course, Nintendo might surprise us with another Star Fox game for the Nintendo 3DS! However, what's the likelihood of that right now if the games they already announced are in the works for being released soon enough?

So, what do you guys suppose anyway?

The *sneeze* (that was a real sneeze) Donkey Kong Rap will probably be edited to remove "hell".

Wasn't that done already when the song was remixed for Super Smash Bros. Melee?

By the way, I believe we were only talking about Nintendo 64 games right now. Although, I do find it a little odd the first Donkey Kong Country was remade for the Game Boy Color, and then the Game Boy Advance (along with its two sequels for the latter), before being finally ported on the Virtual Console. People must still love the very first game so much even today, although compared to its sequels it has grown quite out-dated and "simplified." Who wouldn't agree the very first game is the easiest one of all compared to its sequels?

Now, I know a lot of you loved the new Donkey Kong Country Returns game, but I wish there was a Donkey Kong 64-like game anyway, where DK and crew would return to the 3D platformer formula, just like how Mario is being now treated to a mix variety of 3D and 2.5D adventures!

Donkey Kong Discussion Archive / Will Donkey Kong 64 ever be re-released?
« on: December 02, 2010, 01:40:29 PM »
Hey all you hairless apes out there!

Okay, enough monkey business, and let's start talking about a situation which I have been thinking about that had been driving me bananas lately!

Donkey Kong 64, which I personally consider one of the best Nintendo 64 platformers released in the system's later years. People who bought the original package would have gotten an Expansion Pak for free, which is convenient since the game actually required the Expansion Pak, much like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, which was released a bit later. The U.S. version of the Game Pak was all banana-yellow in colour too. The game even introduced Diddy Kong's upgrades with the Barrel Jet Pack, and the Peanut Popguns. The game also made debut to three more Kongs: Tiny, Chunky, and Lanky. (Only Tiny was later redesigned and featured in further games though, along with Lanky. Whatever happened to Chunky, I wonder.)

Anyway, I really loved the game on the Nintendo 64, and I hoped Nintendo would later port it for the Virtual Console. Of course, then I started thinking about why wouldn't they release it there yet.

Well, for one, Nintendo 64 is getting the least treatment by Nintendo for Virtual Console apparently. I mean, there were so many great Nintendo 64 games, and by far only one third-party Nintendo 64 game (Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber) had been released on the Virtual Console, and it wasn't even that notable during its life-time. Not the mention in 2010, the Virtual Console on the Wii is now dying for some reason, and no official explanations were given for that either.

Nintendo should have released Diddy Kong Racing for the Virtual Console as well, and the availablity of the remake on the Nintendo DS is not an excuse against it, considering there is also a remake for Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS, and yet the original game is available on the Virtual Console. Of course, we're actually talking about Donkey Kong 64 right now, and it doesn't have a remake whatsoever, unlike its predecessors (SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy), which incidentally are all available on the Virtual Console as well!

However, then I thought about an even more dead-end reason why the game Donkey Kong 64 wouldn't be released for the Virtual Console at all! It is quite unfortunate as well, really, and I'm not really sure it could be fixed in any way possible without altering the game so much. What is this reason, you may ask? Well, first of all, I just want to state that Rare had made it painfully clear that they won't be able to release any of their own IP game series for the Virtual Console, such as the original Banjo-Kazooie games, which are currently only available via the Xbox Live Arcade. Now, granted, Donkey Kong 64 should technically belong to Nintendo, but I fear it is doesn't belong to Nintendo by 100%. I'll explain.

If you played Donkey Kong 64 before, this should make sense. The game is just filled with a lot of great stuff, including a couple of bonus, classic games which can be played at any time once unlocked, which are the original Donkey Kong and Jetpac! As you may know, Jetpac is Rare's very first game, released waaaay back in 1983, when they were still called Ultimate Play the Game. Since that game belongs to Rare, it should automatically belong to Microsoft as well. You might think they could easily remove the game, but then again the game was integrated into Donkey Kong 64 in a way that it becomes part of the mandatory game-play! If you had finished the game, you may recall the only way to get the Rare Coin - one of the two notable coins which unlocks the room to the final boss - is by playing Cranky Kong's mini-game feature, which had us attempting to gain a certain high-score in Jetpac! Like, omigosh!

So yeah... there seems to be a great difficulty in actually getting Donkey Kong 64 into the world again. Do you suppose there could be any way the game will ever see the day of light again?

Post your own thoughts.

Oh, a new wiki based on Fire Emblem! Great, and just in time as Nintendo kinda announced the second Fire Emblem game on the Nintendo DS will see an overseas release!

We shouldn't use wikia as a reference.

Just because Wikia is a greedy host, it doesn't mean the wikis they host are as bad as they are! Wikia hosts so many of the largest online wikis in so many particular topics!

Methinks the number of games in a single series does not justify the size of a wiki at all! For example, there had been five official games in the Star Fox series, two cancelled games (which one has been fully leaked into the internet), with a rumour a sixth game in currently in the works, and the series has a big fandom, loads of merchandise, and additionally three characters, with several related elements, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and one of the characters is a veteran since the very first game. However, apparently, the Star Fox wiki on Wikia seems to have a lot less articles than the Wikia wiki about the Mother series, which only has three games by far, each one almost a decade apart!

Just a thought to think about when regarding establishing wikis based on certain "minor" series.

Saying that the lack of availablity of certain game titles outside Japan would hinder a wiki's database of information is utterly not excusable! I mean, seriously, the original six Final Fantasy games weren't all released in the west, and yet people managed to find out about them anyway during the early days even before Final Fantasy VII was ever first released! I also notice Fire Emblem's fanbase seems to know an awful lot about the earlier games, which weren't released outside Japan either! Apparently, a lot of people were aware of the series even before Nintendo included Marth and Roy in Super Smash Bros. Melee!

By the way, I still think series like the ever-forgotten StarTropics, Nintendo's newly-owned Glory of Heracles, and Nintendo's many one-timers from the Nintendo Entertainment System days, should all have their own wikis! I believe we can include the many one-timers in a collective wiki, and call it like the "Nintendo 8-Bit Generation Wiki" or something...

Oh, and Hotchmoney, Nintendogs games is considered to be part of the Touch! Generations franchise. It cannot have its own wiki.

Oh gosh! Something is missing in the following list!

Quote
1) Franchises With an Already Aligned Wiki
  • The Legend of Zelda (Zelda Wiki)
  • Mario/Donkey Kong (Super Mario Wiki)
  • Pokémon (Bulbapedia)

2) Franchises With Wikis That Need More Growth Before Joining NIWA
  • Animal Crossing (In the works)
  • Kirby (WiKirby)
  • Metroid (Metroid Wiki)
  • Star Fox (Lylat Wiki)
  • Super Smash Bros. (Reserved by NIWA staff)
  • Wars (Wars Wiki)

3) Popular Nintendo Franchises Without Independent Wikis
  • Earthbound/Mother
  • F-Zero
  • Fire Emblem
  • Nintendogs
  • Pikmin
  • Punch-Out!!

4) Less Important Franchises Without Wikis
  • 1080°
  • Chibi-Robo
  • Custom Robo
  • Excite
  • Game & Watch
  • Golden Sun
  • Kid Icarus
  • The Legendary Starfy
  • Magical Starsign/Vacation
  • Pilotwings
  • Puzzle League
  • Sin & Punishment
  • Touch! Generations/Wii
  • Wave Race

Apparently, you guys had forgotten to add the... heh... often forgotten StarTropics series! Yeah, there were only two games, but Kid Icarus had two games as well. Oh, what about Wrecking Crew? What about Ice Climber? What about Balloon Fight? Duck Hunt? Clu Clu Land? Oh, there is also Nintendo relatively new downloadable Art Style series for both WiiWare and DSiWare! Anyone played the sequel to Endless Ocean yet?

Seriously, guys! There are so many Nintendo one-timers that deserve to be up there with the other Nintendo giants! In case you're totally unaware of the entire list of games owned by Nintendo in some way or another, you can always refer to NinDB's list of gaming franchises! Also keep in mind many games and series never seen the light of day outside Japan yet, despite the fact more of them are being internationally released with later games!

Apparently, they do not consider either Ace Attorney or Trauma as Nintendo franchises!

Oh, that reminds me. Anyone here noticed the Glory of Heracles series is finally seeing international release after it reamerged as a brand-new Nintendo franchise? You can read about the history of the series here. This series may have always appeared only to Nintendo consoles, but it never belonged to Nintendo until their creators went bankrupt, and Nintendo, with Paon, acquired all copyrights to series before finally making the lastest installment on the Nintendo DS, which was a first for the game as it saw an overseas release!

By the way, if you're talking about Wii and Touch! Generations games collectively, does this mean it should include games such Big Brain Academy, Brain Age (Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training to PAL users), Electroplankton, Master of Illusion, Picross, Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Sports, and many others?

NIWA Discussion / Re: Introduce Yourself
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:32:29 PM »
Hello all.

New member here. Obviously. Although, I don't know what to say about myself, but I'll try to be valid as possible. So, anyway...

I'm a big Nintendo fan. Yeah, that's right. Also, I am an avid wiki editor. That's true as well, I suppose. I am not, however, a member in any of the founding NIWA wikis, or any other wiki that may follow suit... unless you find me a great Star Fox wiki I can edit, as apparently that Nintendo franchise I'm the most informative about. Too bad I tend to procrastinate a lot, so help me my articles never seem to completed by my own hands!

I may not be a member, but I follow the founding wikis a lot!

I've been a wiki editor at Wikipedia for about three and half years now! I've both edited and created many varieties of articles on both the English and the Arabic Wikipedias, although I'm more active on the Arabic one as this Wikipedia is a major virgin territory for new articles, especially on Nintendo-based video games, and other related topics! I also have an account on Wikia which I use to work on various wikis across the place, mostly the Nintendo-based ones. Oh, and I am also the founder and sysop of the Arabic version of the Star Fox Wiki on Wikia (and pretty much the only member there by far, as it seems like I am the only Star Fox fan out there who fluently speaks the language)! I am also a member at a few certain other MediaWiki-based wikis, but I don't think you may care about those.

Well, that's all I can mention about the wiki stuff. As for other stuff I can do... uh... Oh, I can draw!

Dunno what else to post here... but if you wanna ask me any questions, I'll be glad to answer them.

Lastly, I wanna say I am so glad there is going to be one meta site for all independent Nintendo wikis out there! I sure hope we can eventually work out a hub for non-English wikis as well. The internet needs to be a lot more multi-lingual, and Wikipedia seems to be only place that is developing this idea to an extreme extent!
