NIWA Discussion / Re: Interwiki Transclusion of content
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:02:51 PM »
I thought of this a while ago, and probably mentioned it somewhere within a topic. I'm just not sure what we'd want to translude, other than maybe a few templates from NWiki. On the other hand, we could always start the practice of building helpful templates for other wikis to use.

Wouldn't this eat bandwidth from the transcluded wiki?
A small amount, yes. I believe it only sends an API request, so it doesn't need to load the entire page with all its graphics. But it's still something.

It's really all a matter of popularity. Some people may not think to look beyond the borders of MarioWiki for more specific information. That's why interwiki linking helps, and as far as I can tell, MarioWiki isn't linking to SmashWiki at all on their SSB pages. :(

This is about the only independent sonic wiki I can find. You may be able to get in contact with them.

Dallas, correct? I actually looked up the IP's location, but I wasn't sure if it was correct. (ACWiki's IP points to the wrong place. Our servers are in North Carolina.)

Personally, I'd love to see Luigi's Mansion and Sunshine make a return.

I'm surprised Ubuntu isn't in the list. I use it about as much as I use OS X.

Is there any way to have a search engine on the hub that would cover all the wikis?
That's planned, and it will be coming along with the redesigned main page. :)

Jake, I would think that a Mario Wiki staff member would know what system a Mario game is on...
I was just confused by his wording. Nintendoguy1- Sorry if my post sounded a bit corrective.  :-[ And I agree; Paper Mario TTYD was the best. It has just a few more elements to it that made it feel more complete than the first game. I like how it still references the previous game in a few areas. (Koopa Koot, Lady Bow, etc...)

I heard Mario Party 2 came out on Virtual Console. I'll probably get that!

TTYD; best VC game...well, technically it's the only one I've got but meh, I think it's the best.
He's talking about the original Paper Mario. TTYD was for the Gamecube. They're both pretty great, and my favorite Mario series for sure!

My bad. I didn't mean that hackers could hack the server and get the passwords. I was referring to people keylogging or brute forcing (or just guessing) someone's password. It was more directed at a personal level, and not one directed at the entire system.
Out of concern for personal computer security, I would prefer not to have a single line of a weakness. I would rather have individual logins for the sites and not have a centralized login system, just in case *my* computer gets compromised, so that the damage is limited to whatever wikis I am logged in at the time, and not the entirety of the NIWA OpenID network.
That's understandable. I don't frequently use OpenID either. And of course, regular wiki accounts would still be available in addition to OpenID. This suggestion just gives users who already use OpenID a much quicker registration.

One recent issue that came up was presented as if a simplistic wiki was going to be made a part of NIWA in some official capacity, and it drove me bonkers (my apologies to all parties involve who I may have offended) because I believed that the decision was in the final process of being approved. It might have been best to move the thread to the Staff section, or for someone to come in and say "This matter has not yet been decided, the staff are still looking over it."
I assume that was directed at this post? I didn't find it necessary to state specifically that "we're still looking into it", but if it pleases you than I will be sure to do so in the future. In my defense, I did clearly state that the topic was about a member request. By definition, a request is "an act of asking politely or formally for something". In no way did I imply that we were in any specific stage of negotiation with the wiki. I'd really appreciate it if you could stop using your own assumptions against the NIWA staff. (Your post even states that it was your own belief.)

Let's base things on the facts, shall we? Many of your other points make a lot of sense, so don't think that I'm just trying to disagree with you outright.

Technical issues aside, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea. It's a mixed bag for several reasons: Security reasons (one login to rule them all for you means one login to rule them all for a hacker).
You do realize that this is an open standard that has shown great results, right? It's not like we're just trying to throw together our own system. We're discussing the possibility of using an established system that has already been proven to work effectively. I don't really see hackers as being much of a threat in this case.

I'm interested in enabling OpenID on WiKirby, I just haven't had time to do it. But that's the only real way to simplify the login for the enduser. It works on Wikia bc that's just one website with several subdomains. The only way I can imagine NIWA wikis being able to do it is to have one central user database for all of the wikis. But what bothers me the most about it is that I've always seen Wikia as a liar on this matter. EVERY Wikia wiki's stats page reports ~2 million users. WiKirby may only have around 300, but if we had a functioning universal log in, our stats page would report the sum of all NIWA wikis---Am I the only one that sees that as dishonest?
From what I understand, the way OpenID works is that it only loads user data from the user's main site. So the user count would be unaffected, because only OpenID users that authenticate with your site will be counted in the total. (I could be wrong about this, but it does make sense.)

It technically hasn't been put into code yet- the image is just a mockup I made in Photoshop lol. It'll probably run under a slightly-modified Monobook, though.

And yeah, Dillion's going to put the CSS together for it. :P
Can't wait!  :eekdance:

Looks amazing Tina! It's a good thing, because I've just started playing Earthbound too. Is that still Monobook under there?

By the way, who made your skin? Was it Dillion? We still need one over at ACWiki.

There is an OpenID extension. If a few other wikis are on board with this, I'd be glad to install it on ACW. I think this would put us at the same level as Wikia in terms of interwiki login.

It seems to rely on the original wiki for account information, which would establish 'home wikis' in a way. I'm also not sure how this would effect users that already have accounts on most of our wikis. Could anyone with OpenID experience elaborate on this?

I think he's referring to this wiki request. (Sorry non-staff members. This link is for you. :))

And yes, I think that N-Wiki's scope covers the same content. nintendoconsoles, have you considered contributing to NintendoWiki instead of starting up an entire new one? We've already got quite a few articles set up over there, and it would probably save you a lot of time. :)

NIWA Discussion / Re: A sad state of security.

Yeah, nobody wants to deal with vandalism on their main page. If nobody notices it and changes it (for example, noone is online), it can be incredibly damaging to the wiki's reputation. In my opinion, all main pages should be, at the very least, autoconfirmed protected. Templates do not matter as much, but cascading protection on the main page is a good idea.

Oh, and all policy pages should be protected. We can't have normal-level users (even those with good intentions) changing policies. They require discussion to change.

Ooo! i like that.

I should do that on LW/WB/etc.

It's also worth noting that if you set up a custom namespace for policies, you can automatically have every page in it protected via LocalSettings.php. We don't do that on ACF, but I thought I would point it out for any wikis that would like that functionality.

There isn't very much talk on the staff board about improving wikis or wiki help in general. As you said, those are the kind of topics we like to see on the reference board. Discussions about wikis usually involve server issues, information/graphic requests (for the main page), or emails from potential wiki members. We're not hiding anything important from members hoping to start up wikis of their own.
