The default value is 0, so no.  You can change it though if desired.  You can configure it to need time, edits, or both to be autoconfirmed.

One other thing I've noticed is that the spam rarely happens on existing pages.  This suggests a bot doing it, since for different wikis you cannot rely on the same page existing or on being able to create a page immediately after account creation.  This is why most of the spam is on newly created user pages.  This is true for Dragon Quest Wiki where you can anonymously edit any page by filling in a capture confirmation, yet there is never vandalism using this.

I noticed that for Icaruspedia, you have the ConfirmEdit active for account creation.  This is good, but humans and bots seem to have found a way around this.  Either due to humans actively doing the spamming or programming a bot that can figure out the capture.  Dragon Quest Wiki has the same problems. 

From my point of view here are the options. 

1) Let them spam and just delete it and block their accounts.  This requires more input by admins, but allows you to keep registration open and useful for real users.
2) Change your autoconfirm age to be longer and only allow autoconfirmed users to create pages (and possibly edit).  Spammers rarely want to sign up and come back later.
3) Turn off account creation.  Create a page with an email address that users can email to have an account created for them.  This is drastic, but I've seen it done on other wikis before when they just don't have time to deal with the spam.

Since joining NIWA, we have had an influx of spammers hit the wiki.  We are using the ConfirmEdit extension to use CAPTCHA on account creation so it would seem that they are human spammers and not bots. 

Do any of the other wikis use a spam blacklist or something of that nature?  I'm curious how big wikis like Mario and Bulbapedia combat spam.

I wouldn't worry much about it.  That is probably the least important stat listed for all the wikis.  I really just listed it because it was there and I could.

Not sure why Bulbapedia has no media/images.  Maybe because they are using a customized storage system for their files?

Oh yeah, I totally understand.  I'm thinking the cron would only run once a day, more than that and the stats probably aren't more meaningful.  So even if it was a slow process, it wouldn't matter much.  Of course, things are still thrown off by the fact that some wikis have 91 days for active users and others 30.  There are probably other config settings that skew the values.

Haha, you are so critical.    This was just 10 minutes of work, and I never write Python.  Feel free to make some quick changes and post an updated script.  I didn't work on it longer because I figured out that my hosting doesn't have Python 2.6+, so I kinda quit then. 

I will work on it again when I have some time.

Here is a python script I threw together based on Greenpickle's suggestion above.  It grabs various statistics from each wiki and puts it into a very basic html table.  A couple things...

1) Can one of you with better web hosting put this on a cron?  My hosting only has python 2.4 which does not support the JSON library (2.6+). 

2) I could not find the api.php for the Wars Wiki.  Seems like it should be http://www.warswiki.warscentral.com/api.php.  So that wiki is currently missing. 

The script does not do any sort of error handling at all.  The value for active users it spit out for me (minus Wars wiki) was 1893!

Yeah that's what I figured, but looking at the history of the article, it never lists a value different than 30.  Probably undocumented in earlier versions or something.

Looks like it should be controlled by $wgActiveUserDays.  30 is the default.  Not sure why it would be set to 91 for any wiki, weird.

That would definitely be a cool stat to see.  As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I am just using Google Reader to pull the info for each of the feeds.  To get the number of editors, we would need to write our own software most likely.  It would need to run every hour or so (maybe a cron) and check each feed and compile the information.

Some of the SEIWA wikis posted low numbers this time as well.  That is what happens on small wikis when the few dedicated editors take a break.

In the future I'm going to add a "average posts per wiki" metric.  This will be the total number of posts for all of NIWA, divided by the number of wikis in NIWA.  This will be a good measure over time of how well NIWA as a whole is doing.

Hostgator blows.  I checked today and we are sharing with 93 other sites.  We have had lots of random spikes in performance because of this.  I'm going to contact them to complain, but overall it just sucks.
