NIWA Discussion / Re: NIWA Membership

I'm looking at potential for growth as well. I mean a wiki dedicated to the 8bit era would only go so far.

I tried before, but they generally seemed uninterested, and I moved on. Then again, that was just for a WiKirby affiliation. Of course, if some other independent Kirby comic site came around and wanted an affiliation with WiKirby, I'd accept. So I suppose you could say affiliating with other sites protects yours from losing out to a newer site that's more open to networking.

NIWA Discussion / Re: My thoughts on NIWA
« on: November 13, 2010, 04:15:24 AM »
Alright, I'm going to spill it, we've been in the process of building a collective property wiki, but with the people stretched pretty thin, we haven't given it a launch yet. It's been in the works since NIWA's early days, and will launch in a month or so. Anyway, like I said, we've been stretching out more than before NIWA existed. So we're still learning the ropes and all that. I want WiKirby to do as you said and have tight relations with all of the other wikis. So far WiKirby's role has been to help others with wiki templates and tools. When I made the "Ambassador" rank on WiKirby, I intended for it to be something that would allow user x from wiki y to properly link to articles related to their subject matter. I still need to get people to fill the roles tho.

Edit to not double post: I also agree with you that a minimum fixed amount of content should be a prerequisite here. In my opinion, startups should follow a process of Affiliation to Member; with minimal requirements for each step of the way.

To respond in short, I think your idea/plan could be a positive service around here. In the wake of all of the Wikia migrations, the wikis we haven't heard from such as Golden Sun, etc could be approached. I'm wondering if there's any more slack on your end about the price. None of the Wikia migrants are accustomed to paying for hosting. Would you still host a wiki if in lieu of payment, they allowed you to control the ad account?

Wars Wiki wants this for sure! I'd like to see it on WK too, so if you want to use it there, feel free to, even if it's just your userpage to get it tested in multi browsers, etc.

NIWA Discussion / Re: MediaWiki installation quality
« on: November 09, 2010, 01:32:51 AM »
Alright! Sounds simple. It's a bad time tho, I'm just coming in from work and am due early in the morning, so I'll pass your message to Adam. Again, I appreciate your bringing this to light. Since Wars Wiki's staff is normally too busy to keep up with this forum, school, and their own wiki + forums, I usually pass messages to them. So if they need or even could do better with any of your suggestions, I'll let them know right away.

I just googled "Earthbound final boss" and a lot of pyscedelic-trippy images showed up. I'd go with that if it were mine :p

Speaking for WiKirby, I'm open to your suggested improvement. Adam and I never looked at url mods before WiKirby, and boy was there a lot of reading to do for it. Basically we just settled for what we had. Let me know how to proceed and thanks for bringing it  up!

I - with the help of Axiomist and Turtwig A - am also working on Palutenapedia.
I'm not totally helping. :p I'm just going to help with some Main Page work, as I've done on a few wikis.

yes, The games are published by Nintendo.

That last sentence meant that Axxon and BattleFranky202 might help you out with Palutenapedia instead of working on Icaruspedia. BattleFranky202 operates Starfy Wiki, which we've approached about migrating from Wikia to join NIWA.

The Lounge / Re: a bunch of new Club Nintendo rewards
« on: November 02, 2010, 01:09:28 AM »
O those have been rewards for quite a while now. Even the first time I saw the fans some of them were "sold out" and I was a bit skeptical on how that was possible since I've been checking it regularly for any Kirby items to report on WiKirby. Europe gets that Kirby frisbee-no fair!

Nintendo recently emailed me that the elite status prizes were being shipped but I can't find out what they are.

Membership and Affiliate Requests / Re: Affiliation Request - Wowpedia
« on: November 01, 2010, 09:43:13 AM »
That's the trouble with 3rd party affiliation "suggestions". I think in the future, steering clear of them would save us wasted effort. Feel free to pursue them if you must but after a while I think you'll see why I don't bother. lol

Linking to NIWA impresses me. I was thinking with all of the surging interest to design a NIWA Supporter bar for some of the wikis that support NIWA, are affiliated, hope to join as a member in the future, and/or is staffed by some NIWA crosswiki editors. This bar would be done in a way to not mislead people into thinking "This is a NIWA member".

Anyway, as we all know article count isn't the whole story. Policies and Main Pages make a huge impact. It says "We're in this for the long run." So I'd put a focus on those aspects. Images are usually welcome on wikis. Just a pointer, while browsing IcarusPedia's recent activity I saw people that work on NIWA wikis, so they might be open to working on something that may get an affiliation with their favorite wikis as well possibly preferring a wiki that plans to join those wikis side by side in NIWA.

Well, it looks like we'll have to start responding with a canned message. "Thank you for your submission, this will be brought to the full staff's attention and discussed thoroughly and carefully. In most cases, this is a time consuming process, please be patient." or something.

Anyway, Adrian, Torchickens, and Yuzihax, we aren't saying yes or no at the moment. Conceptually, a glitch focused wiki would be a great inclusion to NIWA's portfolio of offerings. Currently NIWA has 9 franchise specific wikis, and more on the way. If you browse these threads a little, you would see that even bare bones wikis with extremely limited scopes are interested in joining our network. On one hand we're thrilled by this, but in the same breath, we're a little cautious to say 9 proposed glitch driven wikis applying for membership. Although, technically each would be eligible, eventually it would seem ridiculous; since we couldn't possibly bring all of them up to the quality levels of say Zelda Wiki.

As far as I know, no one from NIWA has spoken to Zelda Chaos. But it would be a good idea, since I'm sure Jay would like to work on a more active site. I would prefer something as strong as Strategy Wiki to be the NIWA glitch partner. There would be compromises on both ends, you've stated you are currently on an overloaded server and are having tech issues; Zelda Chaos is running fine, but there's only so many Zelda glitches, then that wiki will be all filled in. A merge could result in the best of both worlds, a broader coverage potential and likely more wiki activity, especially if it's on a server that can handle it.

The Lounge / Re: Well Wikia's just done themselves in.
« on: October 27, 2010, 01:31:59 AM »
Yeah, I keep saying that too. Wikia editors may have gotten accustomed to all of the intersite-crosswiki activity, but with all of the drop outs, those days are on their way out. Pretty much any Nintendo Wiki not in NIWA will see activity fall off later in the year as people naturally move on and new editors find the NIWA wikis first.

Well done!

Interesting, Kid Icarus: Uprising is being directed by Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros. I expect a cameo of some sort.

On WiKirby, I'm wanting this:

Cover the SSB stuff in the Characters articles, create the SSB game articles and how they utilize Kirby characters, places, etc but link to SSBWiki for indepth content. We'll have a Mario article, since Mario keeps popping up in Kirby games, but only on his Kirby appearances, we're linking to SMW for indepth Mario content.
