The Nintendo Direct on September 1, 2016 was a Nintendo 3DS Direct, focusing primarily on content coming to Nintendo 3DS systems in 2016 and 2017. The Nintendo Direct was broadcast to North America, Japan, Europe and Australia.

Contents

North America

This version of the Direct was hosted by Samantha Robertson, JC Rodrigo, Reggie Fils-Aimé, and Bill Trinen. The main contents of the Nintendo Direct were:

  • Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon - Shows a basic synopsis of the game, including the starting Pokémon, the legendary Pokémon on the covers, Alolan variants of existing Pokémon, and Z-Moves. Also announces a launch promotion in which players can obtain a Munchlax with a "Snorlium Z" Z-Crystal before January 11, 2017. The games will release November 18, 2016.
  • Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS - Reveals the game and discusses several of its new features, such as the pre-included courses and medal challenges, course creation tutorials, course sharing, and collaboration. The game will be released on December 2, 2016.
  • Mario Party: Star Rush - Goes over Toad Scramble mode and several of the game's side modes. Also mentions the game's amiibo compatibility. The game will be released on November 4, 2016.
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Details the update to be released in the fall which adds amiibo compatibility to the game. Also reveals a new set of amiibo cards, as well as Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo!, a version of the game that comes with the latest update pre-installed and is packaged with one of the new amiibo cards. These new cards and game edition will launch during the holiday season. Finally, an Animal Crossing-themed "Mini-Direct" has been announced for later in the fall, which will detail the update more extensively.
  • StreetPass Mii Plaza - Details a new update for the service which allows for premium users to store up to 100 guests at the gate at a time and adds the "Quick Plaza", which allows users to quickly go through guests. The update also adds a set of five brand new games. In addition to this, users can download one of two games (either Slot Car Rivals or Market Crashers) for free. The new update was released soon after the Direct.
  • Tank Troopers - Reveals the new game and goes over its gameplay, including the character's abilities and multiplayer features. The game will be released on the Nintendo eShop during the winter.
  • Picross 3D: Round 2 - Reveals that the game will be released in North America and goes over the gameplay. The game was released on September 1, as well as a downloadable demo.
  • Nindies - Reveals a promotion in which new indie titles will be released on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Nintendo eShop every week for all of September at a discount launch price. These include: Axiom Verge (9/1), Jotun: Valhalla Edition (9/8), Noitu Love: Devolution (9/15), Severed (9/22), and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (9/29). Also announces a two-week Twitter contest in which a user can win all five games and the ability to host a content shelf on the Nintendo eShop. Finally, this segment promotes "Nindies @ Night" at the EMP Museum on September 1 and the "Nintendo Indie Lounge" at PAX West between September 2-4.
  • The Legend of Zelda - Discusses the 30th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. The segment briefly discusses the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition, which includes The Legend of Zelda as one of its 30 installed games (releasing November). Also announces a new series of The Legend of Zelda amiibo based on classic depictions of Link and Zelda, which will release December 2. In addition, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing three Zelda books, one of them being The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts (available for pre-order), and mentions performances by The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses. Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was announced to be released on the Wii U Nintendo eShop after the Direct.
  • Nintendo Selects - Briefly details the recently released Nintendo Selects titles.
  • Hardware - Details the newest-released systems and bundles: The "New Galaxy Style" New Nintendo 3DS XL, and the Super Mario 3D Land New Nintendo 3DS bundle.
  • Hyrule Warriors Legends - Details the third set of downloadable content, the Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks Pack, which will release after the Direct, as well as mentioning the season pass.
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice - An overview of the game, describing the basic gameplay and plot. The game will be released on the Nintendo eShop on September 8.
  • Dragon Quest - Briefly discusses Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, set for release in 2017. The segment then discusses Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, talking about the new features and changes to the gameplay. The game is also available for pre-purchase on the Nintendo eShop, which gives users a free Dragon Quest VII menu theme. The game releases on September 16, 2016. Also advertises the Dragon Quest VII videos on Nintendo's YouTube channel.
  • Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls - Discusses the plot and new gameplay elements of Yo-kai Watch 2 compared to the original, as well as exclusive Yo-kai between both versions. First-print copies of the retail release feature a medal that gives Jibanyan a new Soultimate move, while the digital releases allow players to befriend either Robonyan F or Sailornyan. The games will be released on September 30, 2016.
  • Disney Magical World 2 - Shows a trailer for the game and announces exclusive Frozen-themed costumes for pre-purchasing the game. The game will launch on October 14, 2016. Also announces new Disney-themed Nintendo 3DS menu themes.
  • Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice - Showcases the game's various features and modes. The game will be released on September 27, 2016; launch copies of the game are packaged with a DVD featuring three episodes of the Sonic Boom animated series.
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse - Shows off gameplay and announces that the game can now be pre-ordered. Launch copies of the game will come with a free metal emblem set. The game will release on September 20, 2016.
  • Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World - Announces the game and shows off several of its exclusive features, such as the Poochy Pups and Poochy stages. Also announces a set of stop-motion shorts animated by Dwarf, 30 of which come with the game. Finally announced is a Poochy amiibo, which will be available both individually and in a bundle with the game. Both the game and amiibo will launch on February 3, 2017.
  • Ever Oasis - Showcases various gameplay features, such asdealing with travelers, enemy combat, and expanding the oasis. The game will be released in 2017.
  • Mario Sports Superstars - Announces the game and shows off its gameplay and features, such as the five sports and multiplayer features. The game will be released in Spring 2017.
  • Pikmin for Nintendo 3DS - Announces the game and discusses and shows its gameplay, being a 2D platformer rather than a 3D adventure game like past Pikmin titles. The game will be released in 2017.

Between parts of the direct are a series of segments featuring Reggie trying to find his New Nintendo 3DS. Bill finds it but also tries to take Reggie's donuts, and hides in a box so he doesn't get caught, which is set to be shipped to Easter Island. However, Bill is able to return in time to announce the upcoming 2017 games.
