Welcome to the Help Wanted thread. If you are in need of assistance or just wanting to ask some general questions, then this would be an ideal place to start. Please try and be as informative and detailed about what you are needing, and while you are waiting for someone to reply you can try reading through others' requests and trying helping them.

Hello. Right now I'm in need of some information. Anyone know of a good and reliable place for hosting? I'm wanting somewhere to set up a blog, forum, and a wiki. Preferences are given for places that are cheap, but if anyone has any spare room on their servers that would be lovely as well.

tacopill

Stickied because i see it as useful.

I don't know, but I'll bet there's at least one user on the forums who has room to spare on their servers.

Maybe, but not all of these are necessarily for wiki-related projects.

Again, anyone know of a place to get cheap hosting that supports wiki, forum, and blog software? I'm not very literate when it comes to figuring out if hosting providers can offer/support those features.

WiKirby still needs help with cache restorations. I posted the details in the [http://www.niwanetwork.org/forums/index.php?topic=705.msg15390#msg15390]WiKirby History Hole[/url] thread.

I made a list of pages I haven't checked, although, Vellidragon restored several of them before. Easiest thing that you could do, without even editing is compare which articles in the list have the same or more information as the zipfile mark it off of the list.

Maxite:

Bluehost is decent. It's currently hosting WikiBound and FE Wiki.
Dreamhost is also decent. It's currently hosting Lylat Wiki, and i believe Wars Wiki.

Aximost:

I am going to try and find sometime to help you out, just don't know when..... hm....

Is it possible to change usernames on wikis? If so, how is it done?

A function, Special:Renameuser - talk to your local bureaucrat (that's what it's usually set to IIRC)

(see that's why Edofenrir is awesome)

Does that function have to be installed, or does it come with every MediaWiki installation by default? I can't seem to find that function.

It's an extension, Extension:RenameUser. It needs to be installed separately. :)

Maxite

Okay. What are some useful extensions for wikis?

I like to use the following extensions in the wiki's i help run:

CategoryTree, CheckUser, Editcount, Renameuser, Replace Text, SpecialInterwiki, Cite, CurrentUsers, ImageMap, ParserFunctions, VariablesExtension, OggHandler, AbuseFilter, NewUserMessage, DismissableSiteNotice

Also, to see what extensions a wiki is using, see the Special:Version page. Here are some sample links:

How is this any different than the Help Desk in the Wiki References section other than some more updated (and helpful) links?

Well for one thing, this is more publicly view able. For another thing, the Wiki References section seems kind of closed off.... since you can't post new threads there.

And many of the threads are closed.

Perhaps we should try and fix those problems with the help forum and make it more like this.

I like this idea.  Sure, it will cause the two help threads to be unused, but that's fine due to it being replaced by something more professional.

we have two help threads?  ???

Quote from: Member #36
Yes, the one that I created (The Wiki Help Desk V2), and the one you stickied (The Help Wanted Thread)

When I made the thread, the NIWA only had six members (if I recall right).  Therefore, (at that time) there wasn't need for a forum since it would of been empty.  Now, however, with such a large group of communities, it can only make sense to create such a board to hold individual threads for each individual problem.

So, I'll bring it up in staff (or in a public board) so we can talk about it further.

Of course, there's something else which may make the board less necessary.

ah, ok.

Still. This thread has a different scope. For instance, i don't think The other thread would of allowed a hosting question...

Why not?  I created it so people could ask any question related to a wiki or tech.

Also, all questions should be wiki-related, as all non-wiki related questions will be deleted on sight.

web hosting is not necessarily "wiki-related".

I could easily edit it to include tech.-related issues and get the board open, but once again, the * system may make both of these inefficient.  Though, it would also be overwhelming for the individual or group to handle all those issues.
