NIWA Discussion / Re: Interwiki Redirect Pages

Which downsides would those be?
Yeah, I mentioned that Wikimedia sites probably avoid them for good reason.

They are:

  • They break every single special page that has to do with pages linking to other pages.
  • They have to be edited in a roundabout way.
  • Marking new ones as patrolled requires very indirect ways of reaching the page. Such as certain, rarely used, special pages or manual URL manipulation.

There may be others, but those are most important.

If interwiki redirects were possible I'd think Wikipedia would have done it by now.
It is of course possible. I think it might be just this problem that lead Wikipedia to using soft redirects instead. It's not exactly a high priority bug to fix I'd imagine. So it fits.

NIWA Discussion / Interwiki Redirect Pages
December 26, 2010, 08:04:37 AM
I'm bringing this to attention here. Zelda Wiki.org recently attempted to set up redirects to take users directly to Smash Wiki. They're breaking several special pages.
http://zeldawiki.org/Special:WantedPages
http://zeldawiki.org/Special:BrokenRedirects
http://zeldawiki.org/Special:DoubleRedirects

All the errors currently on there are caused by redirect pages to Smash Wiki. I'm told that other NIWA wikis had this kind of trouble too.

One of our users has this to say about it:
QuoteA bit early to come up with a conclusion, but here's what I think: The wiki takes the redirect and sees if it exists in the domain.

ie. It will look to see if zeldawiki.org/ssb:Dream Land exists, not ssbwiki.com/Dream Land
If that is the case, we either have to:
1. Fix the wiki from the inside
2. Delete the redirects

So the questions I have are: Are other wikis here having the same problem? If so, have you figured out anything about them? And then what could we do about them? If we can't fix it, should we all abandon these kind of redirects and instead make a more of "soft" redirects like what are used on Wikimedia sites (for example, German proverbs)?

NIWA Discussion / Re: NIWA improvement Idea (PLEASE READ)

We have not had any luck with OpenID at ZW. It has done more harm than good. It has not given us a benefit worth the costs. The particular extension we have conflicts with almost everything we have that is related to user accounts. It makes renaming buggy, it conflicts with user creation logs, it breaks bot account scripts, it causes database errors, etc. I am not sure if it that is with the extension itself of just the nature of the whole process in relation to the software.

More realistically, we could instead use something more like wikipedia. In it you can link up your existing accounts to a global login. There are extensions for it. Just takes a little searching.

Ah. Right away, gotta say this. It's a popular misconception that Skype is voice chat only. Surprisingly most people we ask to come on Skype think it is. Skype actually has an excellent IM system that's superior to other IMs. It has a chat history that can go back as far as you want it to, you can edit your own IMs at any time and even remove them, and it has a much more dynamic group chat systems than any other IM. Plus a really good organization of group and one-on-one conversations without a mess of windows like other IMs have.

Just had to clear up any confusion that anyone might have had about it.

Nothing I can add as to which to use. But I could explain the situation at ZW.
Zelda Wiki.org, uses Skype as its chat, both for general users and staff. We found that it was simpler use and more dynamic.  Our previous attempts at IRCs failed because no one wanted to use them. This was actually the idea of myself and Mases. We saw some other sites doing it, so we started one up. It's the main chat for it now and we've found it far more effective than an IRC, our official IRC channel was closed down shortly after starting on Skype.

The bank description says there's a 2% interest rate. At that rate it would take at least 50 NIWAs before you'd see anything from it. But from the list of richest bank members, for those who have more than enough to see gain from 2%, it's sometimes the same amount for days, obviously no interest gained. Is the interest functional? It doesn't seem to be. I doubt they're just withdrawing the daily gain.

It's so hard to choose. So many of them are awesome. I suppose I could say Twilight Princess, it was epic. But Wind Waker was very unique. And of course Ocarina of Time is just timeless. Majora's Mask has major replay value. Don't even get me started on the highly addictive handhelds....  AHHHH! Why do I have to choose?  :eekdance:

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Movies

I saw the Mario one. Really... it wasn't terrible. I expected a lot better, yeah. But it really wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen. It's not like they should have expected to get it right on the first try. Why... if everyone gave up at the first failure, then we wouldn't have anything good today.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Movies
July 09, 2010, 04:07:15 PM
Yes, movies based on Nintendo games. We all know we want them. And so far the only ones to get real attempts has been Pokémon, which have been rather successful. They tried at Mario, but from what I understand, that flopped.  There are plenty of movies based on video games. One of the most recent being Prince of Persia.
For Nintendo, the ones I can think of being live action are Mario, Metriod, and Zelda.  I can't imagine Kirby or Pokémon ever being live action.
If done by a professional studio under license by Nintendo, I think such movies could work out. Really, Nintendo is appealing to the casual market more and more these days, why not tap into this potential [HUGE] income source?

If I wait long enough before playing it again, like focus on other games, I can forget how everything was done and it'd be close to like new. Won't compare to the original thrill when it seemed harder to me, because I'm more skilled now. But it's close.

Here's the available, non-color,  effects for the text effects that that store had:

  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Drop Shadow
  • Shadow
  • Blur
  • Glow

Yeah, the ghost type sounds great. It also has the great name, Spookeon. That's just classic. But with our luck, they'd just call it Ghosteon. Rather dull name.  :'(

When I attempted a small website of my own, the service I used came with a store package. There were a lot of features. Some of them though were way too powerful to give to normal members. I don't know what is available here and that just wasn't used, but here's the effects that were available for items there, that I don't see in place here:

  • Buy a password to a hidden forum (non-staff)
  • View another user's warning level.
  • Change any member's title.
  • Decrease another member's bank interest.
  • Unban a user.
  • Temp ban a user.
  • Change a user's signature.
  • Change a user's avatar.
  • Get random item.
  • Text effect added to username.
  • Add to own post count.
  • Close/open own topic.
  • Close/open any topic.
  • Increase bank interest rate.

As you can see, some of them are far too powerful to give to normal users. But some, like the bank interest one, should be good.
They look cool, well, some. If you have the link to the mod, I could install them
It was exclusive to the service. They don't offer it to others.

I can code some of those into the shop. It's very easy to create new items. Just tell me which ones you want.

If anyone has any common sense, I'm guessing they'd want the increase bank interest, random item, and maybe the close/open own topic (not sure on that one though). The text effect one worked on mine because it was small, not sure if it'd work here because the colors for the groups are important and people adjusting their own colors is counterproductive.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo 3DS
July 08, 2010, 07:32:11 PM
Speaking of the bits, I'm willing to bet that it is 128. I've noticed a pattern. The handhelds were about a couple generations behind the consoles.
GBC was a lot like the NES, GBA was the SNES, DS was the N64, and logically as the pattern follows the 3DS will be like the GameCube. Remakes of games on the consoles did appear first in the respective handhelds.

Another pattern that I've seen since the GBA. You have the initial handheld, then you have an ungraded version which is a large improvement over the original, and then you put in a third version which is for the most part just a casual pleaser with extra features that are basically pointless for gaming as well as removing important features, mostly for squeezing a bit more money out of the line before releasing the next one.  So that's GBA/GBA SP/GBm  and DS/DS lite/ DSi , both removing the backward compatibility in the third version. The micro removed the connectivity to the GCN, and the DSi had really poorly made L and R buttons that failed for a lot of people.   So if that pattern holds, then we should expect an upgraded 3DS before too long, and then a smaller, sleeker version with improved features, and then a third version with gimmicky extra features as well as reduced playability of the system.   I did see that the 3DS more closely looks like the original DS and not the DS lite.

NIWA Discussion / Re: Metroid Wiki Update

Yeah. I'm not sure I'd be much good for you yet. I'm more of a coding, template, and trouble shooting guy. Mel's already used most of the templates I made for ZW and has a good handle on them.  I wouldn't be good for content, I only have two Metriod games and I haven' finished either of them.
Perhaps when it's a bit larger though I can jump in there and do a bit of coding. I'll take a peak now and then anyway though, see if there's anything I can do now.

The Lounge / Re: Internet browsers

I used to use Firefox, but it just got to the point where its memory leak was so bad that I couldn't use it. So I went to Chrome. It's pretty good. I could do without its glitches in randomly not wanting to load a page. But it's the only browser that is good with extensions that I can use. Really I can't use the internet without the Web of Trust extension.

Dragon/Fire would be cool. I always wanted one of those. I'd also like to see Bug/Psychic.
