The Lounge / Re: Medabots Wiki - We need help!

I don't think so. If Article A is in Category B and Category B is in Category C, there shouldn't be a need for Article A to be directly in Category C. I guess it depends on what you're trying to do, but I can't think of any situation where it would need to be within Category C both directly and indirectly.

Sorry if that explanation was hard to follow.

I am currently working on a Kid Icarus wiki. It is definitely not in shape to be a NIWA member at this moment, but I do hope to join sometime in the future. As many of you know, Pit plays a role in the Super Smash Bros series. So should I:

A.) create a full-fledged SSBB article
B.) link to SSB-Wiki's SSBB article
or C.) make an article named Kid Icarus in Super Smash Bros. and then link to SSB-wiki for greater detail

I guess this is a bit of a bigger question. Is NIWA just here to support independent wikis and prevent NIWA from monopolizing the "industry", or is it here to create a network of inter-linking wikis that can one day become a unified online encyclopedia for all things Nintendo?

How can I add a favicon to a wiki?

I don't believe you can close a wikia wiki. You can only abandon it if I'm not mistaken.

Green, because it's the standard Yoshi.

Mine has got to be Super Mario Bros. 3 just because I grew up on it. I think it's the greatest 2D-platforming game I've ever played.

Pikmin / Should I start Pikmin?
October 24, 2010, 08:44:07 PM
I bought it earlier this summer, but I haven't played it yet. I'm fairly busy right now, but I'm not exactly swamped. Should I start playing it now and play about 1 hour each day, or should I wait until I have a lot of free time and play it all in a weekend or two?

How long is it anyway? I generally don't like to play games when I'm busy because they get pushed aside. Then a month or so later, I'll be in the middle of a game I've forgotten so much about. I guess I can make an exception though if Pikmin is relatively short.

Ideally you'd want something that would let you delete your wiki when you move. If you work on Wikia, they would keep your work, so you'd be building your own competitor. There's talk of some extra hosting space going on around here, so I'll see if any of them can look at this topic.

Yes, that would be great if I could get some hosting space here, but I also found a site called wikkii.com. Unlike Wikia, it really lets the creator do whatever he or she wishes.

Its also very decentralized. For example, each wiki it hosts requires separate membership. If I'm not mistaken, wikia has you use one account for all wikias you want to edit. Basically, each wiki is independent of wikkii and all of wikkii's other sub-sites. The only connection is that they host it - and of course the domain name. They don't really monitor content or pressure owners into decisions. If you look at their wikis, you will notice that they don't even brand their name anywhere except for on a small banner in the bottom left corner.

I'm not too worried about wikkii ''taking over'' my wiki, but hosting on NIWA is still something I would appreciate.

P.S. Here's my wiki: http://kidicarus.wikkii.com/wiki/Main_Page . It is less than a day old which is why it is so empty. Here is an example of an established wiki on wikkii: http://gintama.wikkii.net/wiki/Gintama_%E9%8A%80%E9%AD%82 . You can barely tell it's part of a ''wiki farm''.

I am starting a Kid Icarus Wiki, but it will not initially start independently. I plan to start on a wikifarm to save myself some money. After all, the first couple months of a wiki will just be getting it on its feet. After the first few months, I will break away from the wikifarm and seek NIWA affiliation/membership. From prior experience, which wikifarm would you suggest as far as transferring with ease is concerned?

Edit: See post 3 for second part of topic.

Edit 2: The title of this thread originally asked which wiki farms handle exporting the best. The focus has sort of changed to evaluating Wikkii.com. I'm just saying this in case anyone is trying to follow this thread.

Sorry I didn't post again. I couldn't find my own forum post! XD But I know of an AC wiki to join us. It's animalcrossingforums.net/wiki. But it doesn't have enough articles to be able to join. I'm helping out there, as they need at least 100 more articles to join NIWA :O So if you have the time to help, please join! I've added like only 5 articles and we really need help! And WOW tacopill's list is long! But the suggestions I listed aren't too small to have their own wikis. Pikmin had only two games,, right? Yet it has its wiki! Chibi Robo has the GC game and Park Patrol for DS. Golden Sun has a few games. They can still have their own wikis! And AC has 3 released games and one unreleased but confirmed game: Animal Crossing 3DS. But the series I listed aren't too short. So does anyone still agree?

It's not so much about the games. Think of Super Smash Bros.; it has only three games, but it has enough content to justify as many articles as a series like Metroid or Kirby - each of which has about a dozen games. I haven't played any games in the Chibi-Robo or Golden Sun franchises, so I can't knowledgeably comment on its content. However, if you think each franchise has enough detail to support several hundred articles, I don't see why they shouldn't have their own wiki.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm talking about. It's nice to know that it's being looked into, and I'll definitely be looking forward to it.

Is it possible to create a wiki that incorporates the articles of all the other wikis? Basically an all-inclusive Nintendo-wiki so that I could enter something into the search bar and articles from any sub-wiki could show up?

I fully understand that NIWA is not aiming to be an all-inclusive wiki network at this time. I'm not saying it should be or it shouldn't be in the future; I have no firm opinion regarding that.

I'm just saying that no one should take a position on this matter based solely on the name of this organization.

I don't see why NIWA can't accept non-Nintendo wikis and still keep the name NIWA. 7-Eleven keeps its name even though most of them are now open 24 hours; 20th Century Fox never renamed itself to 21st Century Fox; and KFC is still known as KFC despite now being available outside of Kentucky. Those are just some of many, many examples. A change in a company's - or organization's - direction rarely leads to a name change.

Does a wiki need to be hosted on a home server to be considered independent?

I was thinking about using a web hosting service to host a website, then upload MediaWiki software onto the website. I also plan to get a custom domain name for it. The web hosting service would not be a dedicated wiki-hosting service. Right now I'm looking at sites like http://www.yola.com/. Would this be considered independent?

Does anybody have any suggestions regarding the name of the wiki?

Here are just some that I've thought of: Kid Icarus Wiki, WiKid Icarus, Wiki Icarus, Palutenapedia, and Palutena's Encyclopedia
#877
The Super Smash Bros. website lists it as PK Fire.
#878
The Legendary Starfy, if it can find a community, probably has enough content for its own wiki. On an unrelated note, I am planning to begin a Kid Icarus Wiki for NIWA. If any one has any objections, please let them be known.

I've expanded the EarthBound article so that it is longer than just a sentence. I've also made a couple pages for the towns.

Right now, should we concentrate on making long pages or making numerous pages? I was thinking it would be nice to just make many short pages because they will grow over time. On the other hand, you might want us to start with thorough pages so that we won't end up with a wiki full of stubs.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Your Favorite Nintendo Game

Super Smash Bros Brawl. It has so much depth and the art - in the form of music and stage backgrounds - is amazing. I feel like it is the total package. AND I don't care that the online play is laggy, it's best enjoyed with a couple of good friends.
