Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is the fifth main installment in the Fire Emblem series. Originally a side project during work on Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, the game was originally released for the Super Famicom over the Nintendo Power service in September 1999, and was later released on a standard cartridge in early 2000. Thracia 776 was the final game worked on by series creator Shouzou Kaga before he left Intelligent Systems in August 1999, before the game's launch.

The original Nintendo Power release of the game was accompanied by the Thracia 776 Deluxe Pack, which included a cartridge with the game written on it, a cloth map of the Thracian Peninsula, a promotional VHS, and two pairs of pegasus and wyvern plushes.

Story

The story of this game is set during the second generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, on the continent of Jugdral in the year Gran 761. The Grannvale Empire has expanded to encompass almost the entirety of the continent.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is largely similar to that of the previous installment, Genealogy of the Holy War, while featuring a larger number of smaller and more compact maps compared to it. However, Thracia 776 introduces several new and exclusive mechanics to the series, as well as refining mechanics from the previous game. Among them is the addition of the "fatigue" stat, which increases as the unit performs actions during a stage, and if a unit's fatigue exceeds their HP then that unit will become tired and unable to be used for the next mission; this does not affect Leif, however. This game also introduces the constitution stat, which determines how much the unit's weapon weighs them down. Thracia 776 also removes the resistance stat (A unit's magical defense in this game is determined by their magic stat), and the movement stat can increase with level-ups. The weapon rank system has also been altered, with a unit's weapon rank leveling up as they use a given weapon type rather than being predetermined based on the unit.

Thracia 776 is the first game in the series to feature sidequests, extra chapters that take place between the events of two chapters within the main storyline. These sidequests can be unlocked by fulfilling certain conditions within certain main story chapters.

Another gameplay mechanic introduced in this game is the "fog of war"; during chapters with this effect, most of the map and all enemies are completely hidden by darkness, and are unable to be seen unless the player moves. Finally, this game introduces the "capture" and "rescue" mechanics. Rescue can be used with one unit to save a unit with a lower constitution though their own stats are lowered, while capture causes a unit to seize the enemy rather than kill them, take their weapons, and either let them go or keep holding onto them.
