History

The Super Mario series began with the creation of the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, which involved Mario trying to rescue his girlfriend, Pauline, from the eponymous ape and established the platforming aspect prevalent in much of the series. Since then, more than a hundred games starring Mario and his friends have been developed for Nintendo consoles and the series has become the best-selling video game franchise of all time, while its characters have become extremely recognizable around the world.
