Kirby's Adventure is a Nintendo Entertainment System game released in 1993 and the second mainline installment of the Kirby series. It is notable for establishing Kirby's ability to copy his enemies' abilities, which went on to become a Kirby-series staple. It also sees the debut of recurring characters in the Kirby series like Meta Knight. In 2002, the game was remade for the Game Boy Advance as Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and the original game also has seen additional rereleases ever since.

Not everything is well in Dream Land. For some mysterious reason, the Dream Spring, a magical well that is the reservoir for all the dreams of the citizens of Dream Land, is no longer working. Everyone is being subjected to their worst nightmares every time they go to sleep. Upon reaching the Dream Spring, Kirby finds out that evil King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, thus depriving Dream Land of the magical energy that feeds its spring.

Using over 20 unique tricks and your ability to steal your enemies' powers by swallowing them, you'll have to make your way through a horrific land filled with all kinds of nightmares.

Recover the broken pieces of the Star Rod, and everyone in Dream Land will sleep peacefully once again. If you fail, the citizens of Dream Land will be subjected to a lifetime of terrible nightmares.

Story

Kirby, after realising he hasn't dreamt all night, heads to the Fountain of Dreams to find King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod and broken it into seven pieces, which Kirby must collect to restore peace to Dream Land. After Kirby defeats each boss guarding the seven Star Rod pieces (including King Dedede himself), he restores the Star Rod and attempts to bring it to the Fountain of Dreams, although with King Dedede trying to plead him to stop.

As it turns out, Nightmare has infested the Fountain of Dreams and had to be sealed away by King Dedede by breaking the Star Rod apart. He is unleashed from the fountain after Kirby has put the Star Rod back in its original spot. King Dedede sends Kirby against Nightmare by launching him into the sky, and Kirby eventually defeats him by using the power of the Star Rod. With this finally done, Kirby is now free to return the Star Rod back to its spot on the Fountain of Dreams, restoring good dreams to the people of Dream Land.

Gameplay

As with its predecessor Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure continues the usual 2D platformer gameplay with Kirby's ability to float, inhale and spit out his enemies. In addition to his usual moves, he now gains the ability to perform a sliding attack, dash, and swim in different directions. Debuting in this game are Copy Abilities, which can be obtained from certain enemies when Kirby inhales and swallows them. Copy Abilities give Kirby different kinds of moves depending on the ability, allowing him to easily dispatch enemies from afar, gain faster movement options, or interact with certain objects like stakes and cannon fuses. However, taking damage at any point will cause Kirby to drop his ability as an Ability Star, which he must inhale and swallow again to obtain before it bounces away or is destroyed.

Additionally, several core stage and gameplay mechanics seen throughout the Kirby series would also debut in this game. This includes interactable stage objects like cannons and Bomb Blocks, an expanded level structure that uses an explorable hub with different stages, among others. Sub-Games and Goal Game are introduced in this game as well, with the player able to play three different sub-games (Egg Catcher, Crane Fever, and Quick Draw) in addition to extra modes including "VS. Boss!", a boss rush mode.
