Zelda Wiki (formerly Zelda Universe Wiki, The Zelda Effect, Zelda Wiki.org, and Zeldapedia) is a collaborative wiki with information on The Legend of Zelda series. The site is hosted on ABXY, though its main administration has editorial and interface control in regards to how the wiki operates.
Zelda Wiki is one of the founding members of NIWA, along with Bulbapedia and Super Mario Wiki.
History
In April 2005, the original Zelda Universe Wiki (ZUW) was created as an "act of boredom". Yami and Jess suggested the idea in the ZU chat room, and the wiki was created on April 23, 2005. The ZUW was quickly filled with information, not only about the Zelda series, but also about Zelda Universe and its community. It was also to be used to host Zelda Universe's Zelda Encyclopedia. On an older version of ZU, the encyclopedia existed as a list of words from the Zelda series with short definitions; with the help of the ZUW, the Zelda Encyclopedia expanded and became much more detailed as well. The Zelda Universe Wiki served Zelda Universe for over a year, before it crashed during a server move.
In September 2006 the Wiki was moved to another new server, with a new philosophy and under a new name. The name initially chosen was The Zelda Effect (TZE),[1] however this was quickly changed to Zelda Wiki.org (ZW).[2] In early January of 2011, Zelda Wiki.org officially changed its name to simply "Zelda Wiki." This came after much deliberation among the staff and the community.
Quality standards at Zelda Wiki.org are maintained through the Admin team, who ensure that every edit is checked (or "patrolled"). Patrolling began July 8, 2007 when revision 42608 was marked as patrolled:

The practice of patrolling has continued ever since then.
Zelda Wiki.org is a collaborative project managed by the executive staff, whose role is to oversee administrator operations and consequently editor participation. Formerly, Zelda Wiki was managed by a number of contributing websites, collectively known as "The Masterminds". Since its revival and renaming in 2006, the Wiki had remained hosted on the same server as Zelda Universe under the control of Jess. However, in keeping with the collaborative nature of the project, the administration of Zelda Wiki.org was shared by the webmasters of each contributing site, as well as the other wiki staff members. There was no limit to the number of Masterminds, as all Zelda sites were encouraged to join the project.
Of the original Masterminds, only two sites currently remain (Zelda Universe and Zelda Dungeon), with the other sites having either closed or fallen inactive. Since then, the lineup of Masterminds changed a number of times, with each site contributing to the unique evolution and growth of the project. However, the Zelda Wiki staff decided to discontinue the Mastermind system in favor of closer interconnection with the sister site, Zelda Universe. Since then, Zelda Wiki has maintained a more centralized staff structure, consisting primarily of wiki-exclusive staff and a number of appointed executives.
On March 8, 2017, Zelda Wiki moved to Gamepedia.[3] Ever since, its new url has been zelda.gamepedia.com. Serendipitously, Gamepedia's then-parent company Curse LLC sold its media properties, including Gamepedia and all hosted wikis, to Fandom in December 2018. As part of Project Crossover[4], Fandom's Zelda Wiki merged within Zelda Wiki on June 15, 2019[5]; two years later the domain had changed once again to zelda.fandom.com and had received a new skin.[6]
Following the move to Gamepedia and subsequent purchase by Fandom, Zelda Wiki's status as a NIWA member was a subject of debate within NIWA's administration, with some arguing that Zelda Wiki should be removed from the alliance entirely. However, on October 19, 2022, Zelda Wiki would announce the decision to return to independent hosting, under the name Zeldapedia.[7] As of January 2023, Zeldapedia has returned to using the Zelda Wiki name.
Affiliation
- Zelda Wiki.org currently has a collaborative link with Zeldapendium, a German-language Legend of Zelda wiki. The partnership allows Zelda Wiki to provide relevant interwiki language links in the sidebar, using the {{De}} template.
- Zelda Wiki has a long-standing affiliation with StrategyWiki.org, a site offering strategy guide information in a wiki format. All of our game articles carry a link to the relevant guides at StrategyWiki.org, and individual strategy links within articles are facilitated using the StrategyWiki template.
- In early 2010, Zelda Wiki formed a partnership with Bulbapedia and Super Mario Wiki, starting the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance.
