Wrecking Crew '98 is a sequel to the 1985 NES game Wrecking Crew released in 1998 originally exclusively available from the Nintendo Power cartridge service. In this game, the goal is not to simply destroy all the panels, but to destroy more panels than your opponent. The game once again has the player taking control of Mario, where his goal this time around is to completely obliterate Bowser's fortresses using his hammer.

On September 28, 2016, the game became available as a downloadable Virtual Console title on Japanese Wii U Nintendo eShop.

Story

After returning home, Mario discovers that Bowser has been constructing big buildings all over the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario goes home to get his hammer to destroy the buildings, to save the plants whose sunlight they're blocking. Enemies such as Foreman Spike attempt to stop Mario.

Gameplay

You destroy panels with your hammer, similar to in Wrecking Crew, however you can also destroy them by lining up 3 or more of the same colour. They each have different properties. You or the opponent are defeated when the panels reach above the line at the top of the screen.
