Game Freak Inc., formally Taji Corporation (1983) is a Japanese video game development studio. They are primarily known as the developers of the mainline Pokémon series of games.
History
Game Freak began as Game Freak magazine written and published by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori during the 1980s, with volume 1 being published in 1983 by Taji Corp. In 1989, this company would become Game Freak, likely named after the original magazine series and/or Satoshi Tajiri's pen name.
In 1995, Game Freak released a book about video game design called Shin Game Design. While it was about many video games, it featured a small amount of information about Pokémon (prototype sprites and a screenshot) just prior to its release, and Game Freak's other games.
With the success of their Pokémon franchise, in 1998, Nintendo, Creatures, Inc., and Game Freak would establish The Pokémon Company, with the purpose of handling the marketing and licensing of the franchise.
In October 2015, Game Freak would purchase Moa Games, a mobile development company.
